Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Short Scenes, the debut album from Ted Barnes, finds the folksy multi-instrumentalist stepping out from the shadow of Beth Orton, the waif-like singer/songwriter he's backed with his acoustic guitar ever since her debut solo LP Trailer Park, and leading his own raggedy band on a trek into the countryside. Fielding members of alt.country sextet Lincoln, bare acoustic balladeers Sunhouse, long-departed Warp types Red Snapper, and Ms Orton herself, he's clearly in good company. This revolving group of musicians produces a warm instrumental sound that's reminiscent of Lambchop or James Yorkston--a rustic country music with a warm, soulful edge.

Ten of these 13 tracks are purely instrumental, achieving a meditative state that's perhaps intensified by the occasional use of subtle electronic loops--see the jazzy trot of "Parisian Shuffle", or the trip-hop glide of "9 Years in a Cage". However, it's worth pointing out that this patchwork musical design is completed with neat seamless joins. The key track is "Ted's Waltz", where a coquettish Orton weaves a sunny tale of desire, her fluttering vocal striking the odd high note of ecstatic lyrical loveliness: "Black out the sun from your eyes / bare naked sky". This is modern folk done right. --Louis Pattison

Ted plays most (all?) of the instruments on this album of gentle, persuasive music. When the ears need to ease into the next phase of the day the my mind needs something to hold on to there's plenty to be found here. Dense, careful and lush with enough musical references from folk, ambient, and the fringes of cabaret to keep you wondering where he's going next, these tracks emphasise that it is the individual that counts not the general populist direction. Luvverly stuff!

I appreciate his work with Beth Orton. I looked to see if his genius would come through on this disc.

Nope. I listened twice and tossed it in the waste can. nuff said.
