Product Description

On a great value Double CD, Raven presents two original Classic Rock albums by Jim Capaldi: Short Cut Draw Blood (1975) and The Contender (1978). Long out of print, these albums marked the continuation of a lengthy and successful solo career. While best remembered for his role in Traffic, Capaldi established his solo career with the exceptional albums Oh How We Danced (1972) and Whale Meat Again (1974) (RVCD-302). Short Cut Draw Blood is acknowledged as his greatest release and yielded the worldwide hit single 'Love Hurts' and 'It's all Up to You'. He followed that up with The Contender which mixed AOR sounds and a dance beat, appearing here on CD for the very first time. Included are 12 rare bonus tracks – many also appearing on CD for the first time – culled from non-album singles and the American version of The Contender titled Daughter of the Night. The albums feature a stellar cast of session musicians – Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, Paul Kossoff, Chris Spedding, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and Horns. With 30 tracks, 140 minutes of superb quality audio and detailed liner notes this is an essential collection for the Classic Rock enthusiast.

"Short Cut Draw Blood" was one of my favourite albums of the late 70's, but the last time I heard it was in the early 80's. I've been keeping an eye out for a CD version for a couple of years now, so I was delighted to come across this double-album offering. It is every bit as good as I remember it being, and the bonus tracks are simply icing on an already delicious offering. Well worth the money!

Short cut draw blood the better of the pairing here, short cut having the 2 hits love hurts and the brilliant it's all up to you, the contender is a bit hit and miss for me. If you like traffic you might find these a little light weight though .

As an owner of the original Lp of "Short Cut Draw Blood" very pleased to get a Cd version such a rare recording; wonderful Lp(Cd) not so impressed with the second one i.e. The Contender - a bit of a waste but worth the price just to get "Short Cut.."

Revised for the Raven 2 CD release (this review was originally written for the "Short Cut Draw Blood" CD issue):

Raven has finally issued this two CD reissue of Jim Capaldi's "Short Cut Draw Blood" and "The Contender" each with bonus tracks. This release was originally suppposed to come out in July of last year but was delayed because of the boxed set Dear Mr. Fantasya strong boxed set release covering Jim's entire career from beginning to its unfortunate early end (Jim passed away from cancer).

First up the songs on each disc are as follows:

"Short Cut Draw Blood" plus bonus tracks
Disc: 1
1. Goodbye Love
2. It's All Up To You
3. Love Hurts
4. Johnny Too Bad
5. Short Cut Draw Blood
6. Living On A Marble
7. Boy With A Problem
8. Keep On Trying
9. Seagull
10. Tricky Dicky Rides Again
11. Sugar Honey
12. If You Think You Know How To Love Me
13. Good Night & Good Morning
14. Talkin' Bout My Baby
15. Still Talkin'
16. Goodbye My Love
17. Baby You're Not My Problem

"The Contender" plus bonus tracks Disc 2
1. Dirty Business
2. Sealed With A Kiss
3. Daughter Of The Night
4. You Burn Me
5. Game Of Love
6. The Contender
7. Elixir Of Life
8. Short Ends
9. Hunger And Greed
10. Had A Dream Today
11. A Good Love
12. Stay With You
13. I'm Gonna Do It

"Short Cut" is the stronger of the two albums but each has its memorable highlights. "Love Hurts" became a hit single and helped boost the album in both the UK and United States while "Johnny Too Bad" also got signficant airplay at the time.

"The Contender" (aka "Daughter of the Night" in the U.S.)moves in a blue eyed soul direction as Capaldi incorporated what was going on in the pop world at the time including touches of R&B and Disco mixed with the Rock/Pop. Two of the tracks here "Daughter of the Night" and "You Burn Me" are two of the best songs on the album along with the title track "The Contender" (which was originally written and recorded for the latter album in this two albums on on CD setOh How We Danced / Whale Meat Again.

If you're curious as to the quality of the in terms of the songwriting, a handful of tracks from these two albums ended up on the boxed set. As with many of Raven's releases we get sleeve notes on the two albums and various singles/b-sides. The sound is pretty good for a modern remaster and wsa done by Warren Burnett at Raven (the label's own mastering studio).

It's nice to see these two get reissued on CD with bonus tracks. I miss Jim he was a great talent.
