Product Description

Product Description

Vintage clothing provides a fantastic opportunity to wear beautifully made garments that are totally individual, as well as a small piece of history. It was only a few years ago that wearing vintage clothing was strictly for fancy dress parties and yet today the sartorial trends could not be more different. Vintage fashion is now coveted all over the world, and style icons such as Kate Moss and Sienna Miller are regularly photographed wearing gorgeous clothes by designers whose heyday was decades ago. Contemporary designers are looking to the past for inspiration and translating long forgotten designs into modern pieces, whilst high street stores such as TopShop, Oasis and Urban Outfitters stock vintage or vintage-inspired lines which make this look accessible to everyone. Whether as a wearer or collector of vintage fashion, this book provides all the information on how and where to buy vintage fashion. Beginning with a look at the legacy of over 70 seminal designers from the last 120 years and the key fashion pieces that defined each decade, it looks at how to separate vintage clothing from that which is antique, retro or simply secondhand, as well as hints and tips on what to look for and how to haggle when you find it. With contributions from the doyennes of the fashion industry - from Hilary Alexander to Miuccia Prada - the book is packed with much sought after insider 'fashionista' tips about what to look for when buying vintage, how to recognise something of value and, perhaps most importantly, where to find it. The final section of the book contains an exhaustive list of the names and addresses of vintage outlets all over the world, as well as vintage fashion fairs, websites, auction houses and flea markets. Far from being the prerogative of the rich and famous, "Shopping for Vintage" shows how we can all own a little piece of fashion history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket sized but big on info., 19 Mar 2007

The first half of this book is an extensive review of the major designers and their design styles, going right back to the Belle Epoque, with tips on which are the key items to buy from each collection, and information on how to avoid being taken in by later reproductions. As well as clothing, there is also help with choosing accessories such costume jewellery, handbags and luggage. The second half of the book is a very extensive list of vintage clothing stores worldwide, with a lot of detail on the types of stock carried by each. Web shopping also gets a mention with key sites listed. The book is beautifully illustrated with drawings of iconic clothing - at first I was a little dissapointed there were no actual photographs - but the illustrations are so mouth-watering that in the end I decided it didn't really matter. Portable size with a pretty fabric cover, this would make a great gift for the fashionista that could be carried round in a handbag whilst actually out shopping. A really lovely book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspire me!, 28 Feb 2007
Vintage is definitely the new haute couture and vintage garments always seem to achieve a look which is girly, glam, comfortable and bang on trend, all at the same time and with hardly any effort! Which is why i love a vintage find. But as i'm not a Londoner born and bred, and there arent many vintage treasure troves lurking in the thames valley, I need pointing in the right direction.

This is the book to do so. Not only is it informative but it's so beautiful I want to wear it! It's chunky with lovely thick paper and a fabric cover, a ribbon (with a mock price label!!!) so you never lose your place, and gorgeous illustrations. Definitely one to buy for your trendy best friend!

2.0 out of 5 stars worth the money?, 5 Oct 2008

I was terribly disappointed with the content of this book. There was very little, if any information, which I could not have found by myself on the internet. Wikipedia would be a better source of information on the designers and there signatures. The store directory covered a number of different countries which was the only thing I found slightly satisfying about this book, even then I was disappointed. I live in Scotland and the only places covered were Glasgow and Edinburgh, I know of all the stores mentioned and much more. I bought this book not as a collector but to amuse my own interest of vintage shopping, however if you are interested in collecting I would not buy this book for advice on what to look for or for what to avoid. Not enough time and research went into this guide, it is lacking in content, and I could have written it. Not worth the £15 I stupidly paid for it (including P&P), in hindsight a fiver (£5) at most.
