Book Description

15 April 2012

As an actress, Carlotta Novak never got off the B-list, but as a hit woman who takes out troublesome stars for studios and financiers she’s number one with a bullet. Now Carlotta is faced with a sticky problem: in order to stay in the orbit of her A-list targets, she needs to make a comeback on the screen. But Carlotta‘s plans are complicated when she finds herself caught in the middle of a nasty feud between Hollywood’s favorite power couple and... the Dalai Lama.

Shooting Stars is the first mystery novel by Hillary Louise Johnson, author of Physical Culture and Super Vixens’ Dymaxion Lounge.

Advance Praise for Shooting Stars:

"The funniest Hollywood novel I’ve read in a long time, up there with the likes of the two Peters, Farrelly and Lefcourt." ~Anne Thompson, Thompson on Hollywood

"Only a veteran of Hollywood’s singularly bitchy madness could write a book as weirdly, crazily, wickedly awesome as this." ~David Corbett, New York Times Notable Author of Do They Know I’m Running?

"Hillary Louise Johnson is breaking out a whole new kind of novel: a satire as good as the genre it satirizes. Shooting Stars skewers the Hollywood social scene straight to the wall with its own nail file. And as a straight-ahead noir thriller, this book is moodily striking enough to make Raymond Chandler look twice." ~Madison Smartt Bell

Praise for Super Vixens’ Dymaxion Lounge:

"LA life as it might have been lived by Bridget Jones." ~Marie Claire

"A slim but wickedly brutal take on existential life in modern L.A." ~ Mark Athitakis, Salon

"Johnson is a universe shaper, with a powerful mind careening slightly to self-parody, and a lot of attitude." ~Kirkus Reviews

Praise for Physical Culture:

"The single most shattering novel I’ve read since Jerzy Kosinski’s The Painted Bird." ~Harry Crews

"Hillary Johnson has achieved in Physical Culture a sort of perfect, corrupt beauty." ~ Patrick McGrath

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is Such A Hilarious Book 28 Mar 2012
By Amy Alkon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this book -- it takes the Hollywood we think we know and has its way with it. Just the idea of the Hollywood hitwoman made me want to read this book, and then I opened a few pages and saw how funny it is. Tight writing, hilarious dialogue and scenarios, and a book that kept me awake reading -- and laughing -- into the wee hours. I also loved the real people who made appearances in the book -- my favorite being hit assignment lady Anne Thompson, barking into her phone. Just brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, engrossing - and just a little sadistic 28 Mar 2012
By Jackie Danicki - Published on Amazon.com

It's been a long time since I've found a book I could really get lost in, laugh with, connect with on an intellectual level - and realize I'd read the whole thing in about two sittings. This is that book.

As they say, it's called "show business" - not "show friends". This book drives to the heart of what makes Hollywood run, and brings a fun, edgy perspective that isn't as far-fetched as it might seem. Trying to guess who's who, waiting to see who's next, and getting inside the mind of Carlotta Novak - a singularly cerebral, sexy, all too real character who doesn't take herself too seriously - all make for a read you'll remember. The most fun I've had for less than $5 since, well, ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hit Woman With a Conscience 21 April 2012
By Susan Barksdale, the Carlton Oregon Tattler - Published on Amazon.com
Carlotta's got your back - or not. Depends on your value to the studio money men and how SHE measures your worth. She's cool and cagey with a moral code that trumps the Dali Lama's. After reading Shooting Stars I'm ready to off a few studio execs and dudes in robes. But then again, I'd rather pay Carlotta to do it! Hillary Johnson has created an unforgettable character. A hit woman with a conscience - who knew? I'm hooked and can't wait for the next Carlotta Novak mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart Mystery 27 Mar 2012
By Elizabeth - Published on Amazon.com
I actually fantasized calling in sick so I could keep reading this book.
The characters are all interesting, putting together their abilities at strategic underachieving to unravel a mystery involving Hollywood's most alluring couple. Loved all the Hollywood cultural references to art, place and style.
What a smart mystery, it didn't unfold like I thought it would.
5.0 out of 5 stars Shooting Stars: play on words is just the beginning 24 April 2012

This wicked-funny romp of a book skewers Hollywood (lovingly) with an insider's penetrating vision, a gifted writer's aplomb and a keen observer's detail. If you fail to laugh out loud, I would suggest an immediate appointment to have your funny bone examined. You needn't check your intellect at the door to be admitted to this thrill ride. I, for one, cannot wait to see what Carlotta Novak, our intrepid hit-woman heroine, will have in her crosshairs the next time around.
