Vic and Bob once again return with another dose of the showbiz quiz, Shooting Stars. And frankly, we couldn't be happier. For too long, their barmy brilliance was absent from our screens but the success of their `one-night-only' special from Christmas 2008 and the 2009 series has proved that once again, Vic and Bob are here to stay.
The last series was plenty decent enough yet it lacked that sparkle that made the earlier series so utterly hilarious and one-of-a-kind. Jokes were repeated and recycled once too often and there was something of an over reliance on cheap vulgarities. Don't get me wrong, I thought the 2009 series of Shooting Stars was entertaining enough but not what it once was.
That's all changed with the 2010 run of the series which is absolutely hilarious from start to finish with little to nothing to fault at all. Here we have a true return to form with Vic and Bob coming out with such a refreshing, delicious pot of new material and gags as they give the questions and reduce their guests to hysterics. Also back in the swing of things as team captains are the ever-faithful Ulrika Jonsson (still a great sport as ever) and the ever-gloomy, yet lovable Jack Dee.
Alas...the man with the scores, George Dawes (Matt Lucas) is not here as scorekeeper (for the first time ever!). However, terrific compensation is at hand, with previous Team B member, Angelos Epithemiou, succeeding the baby on drums with his own set of devices, gags and variety showcases. As in the previous series, Angelos is nothing but hilarious with his jokes, scorekeeping and never-ending attempts to make Ulrika his love. The stuff he comes out with literally makes all the guests crack up and there's plenty of classic moments that merit replaying so many times over.
Highlights are never-ending here. You can expect a cracking assortment of celebrities such as John Simpson ("War Correspondent!"), Brendan Cole ("Dance Competitions"), Trisha Goddard, David Gest, Louie Spence, Si King, Example and Captain Slow himself, James May. Watch out for brilliant madness such as Vic's dance with Kimberly Wyatt, Ulrika being teased cruelly by Bob, Jack being bullied by Vic, Si King being disciplined for being a `Naughty Boy!', the comic genius that is the Magic Box, Angelos' thriving on being a DJ the adverts for "Q&B" and "Coldland", a bizarre set of runaway legs (!), and of course, the True-or-False, Clips, Quickfire rounds, final challenges, and the return of one-and-only Dove From Above.
Once again, there's a great assortment of Special Features to be found on this DVD. Brilliant Outtakes and Deleted Scenes/Sketches are to be found here, along with a look at various Celebrity Bank Robbers and a behind-the-scenes look at the "MisterChef" sketch. The highlight of the extras though, is undoubtedly Angelos. A sit down interview with Angelos, a compilation of his best moments and a fantastic commentary on Episode 2 (with Bob Mortimer) are simply funny without fault. No doubt, Epithemiou has become such a hit for this series.
Those who were disappointed with the last series will NOT be disappointed here, I assure you. Vic and Bob are officially back at their best, so come along and - once again - let's start Shooting Stars!
