Amazon.co.uk Review
Relax, switch your brain off, stick your tongue in cheek and settle down. If you can do all of these things, then Shoot Em Up is one of the most downright fun movies you’re likely to have seen in some time. Just make sure you’ve adhered to the aforementioned checklist to the letter first.

Shamelessly over the top, and boasting a carnival of action sequences that each seemingly try to out do the other, the core of Shoot Em Up is Paul Giamatti (Sideways) and Clive Owen (The Inside Man) pitted against each other. In the middle is some nonsense over saving a newborn child, and Monica Belluci’s call girl gets put into the mix too.

That said, all plot is thrown out of the window at every opportunity in favour of more action, upping the body count and – heck, why not? – a bit more action. And you know what? Shoot Em Up works, and it does so because everyone is in on it. This is no postmodern pretentious reworking: this is a fun, stylish action movie, and proud of it. It boasts a trimmed-to-the-wire running time, some outrageous sequences, a few bum notes but a whole lot of energy. And while it is, all considered, an excitable action movie and nothing more, Shoot Em Up is also uproarious entertainment, and the kind of film that Friday night was invented for. --Jon Foster

Synopsis
Paul Giamatti, Clive Owen, and Monica Belluci star in this fast-paced thriller about a pair of strangers united to save a newborn baby from the terrifying grip of an unrelenting criminal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calm down people!, 26 Jan 2008

Ok, plot wise it is bits of other films stuck together, yes it is ridiculous and no its not of the same "quality" of some of Owen(Croupier), Balucci (Irreversible) and Giamatti (Sideways... ish)'s other stuff...

BUT THAT'S THE POINT =P

If you try and analyse this in the same way you would other films it is awful.
The idea of the film is just fun! If you take it seriously you will not enjoy it, and tbh i think that's a good thing.
These days films are too cheesy naturally or are far to pretentious to actually be enjoyed properly anymore.
Not that a little pretentiousness or cheese hurt anyone, but its nice to have a change from people who try too hard and those who dont try at all.
I love analysing films books and anything else that's flung my way but films like this and Crank are just made for a laugh.

Please will people stop saying this is just garbage, because it plainly isn't. Its just not a serious film or an out and out comedy... its just fun =D

I would recommend this to anyone who is capable of watching a film without taking it seriously, and to anyone who enjoyed this I would recommend Crank!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Clive indulges carrots, 5 Feb 2008

I watched this expecting a respectful homage to all those excellent John Woo films. It was nothing of the sort although had borrowed heavily but this ended up being no bad thing because this movie is more a tounge firmly in cheek laugh riot!
The action scenes are fast and in the main expertly shot, although the 'rock' element was annoying. The plot is actually plausible when you think of it in the context of the film but this movie doesnt need plot it prevails by keeping the viewr hooked with one action scene after the next at breakneck speed.
You can tell the actors had alot of fun making this and Giamatti is a wonderful sneering, wise-cracking villain and Monica is extremely good-looking. One of those movies that has to be seen at least once and deserves praise for turning old ideas into fresh celluloid. The sky-diving scene had me in fits of laughter as did the very end scene.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just enjoy the ride!!!, 28 Jan 2008
By Zippygav (Staffs) - See all my reviews
A lot has been said about this film and I fall well into the love it camp. Exciting, fast, loud, daft, unbelieveable and most importantly it doesn't take itself seriously. The beauty of film is that someone can put their creativity and imagination together to produce a product that you have the choice to view or not. This film wears its essence on its cover sleeve, no mistaking it for Driving Miss Daisy.
Yes its amazing how the bad guys miss all the time, how our hero seems to be unstoppable and how he gets the girl, cinema takes libertys, if it didnt we would need 40 foot apes and hobbits living in New Zealand to have some escapism at the multiplex.
If you like Die Hards, John Woo etc.. give this a try, its fun.
And last time I checked in my wardrobe I didnt find a hidden world, talking lion etc..... just my clothes.
