Product Description

Elly Blair welcomes the chance to escape her ex-fiance and job from hell when Grandma Imelda, ready to retire to sunny Florida, calls for her to take over her little southern cafe.

Elly has no idea her grandmother has baked up magic for the unsuspecting townsfolk for thirty years-and now Grandma Imelda insists that Elly use her own hitherto unsuspected magical powers to carry on the family tradition.

But Elly's new at this stuff. Her dishes don't turn out as full of smidgens of enchantment and dashes of wishes come true as she'd hoped. When handsome customer Rory Covington takes a bite of the wrong burger, he ends up capturing the attention of every woman in town. Elly doesn't know if her feelings for Rory are true or based on her magic gone awry.

Tom Owenton is an investigator the National Organization for Magic sent to look into the magical mishap. Unless Elly can reverse the spell, the cafe will be closed permanently. Tom is more than willing to help Elly out of this magical pickle, but she's not sure she should accept his offer.

Elly only has forty-eight hours to find a way to reverse the spell, or she'll lose the cafe and never discover if her feelings for Rory are real.

Elly Blair gets a call about an emergency from her Grandma and returns from New York post haste to Mystic Falls, the town where she grew up only to find that the `emergency' is that her Grandma has decided to retire and Elly is to take over her café. Oh, and by the way, she also has to take over the job of using magic to spread a little health and happiness to her clientele. When a love spell goes awry, Elly ends up in trouble with Organization of Magic, and finds herself having to work out her own feelings about handsome Rory Covington. Is she really in falling for him, or is she just one of many women under her own misapplied love spell?

This is a really lovely book that reminds me of old screwball comedies. The pace is fast, and the dialogue has the rhythmic, banter-like tone of people who think and speak fast. The plot gets ever more unlikely, and more fun, as it goes on. Rory is a real keeper - a handsome, small town man who runs a farm and rescues old race horses. Then is there is the cocky, and surprisingly touchy-feely, Tom who is both the face of the interfering Organization of Magic but also someone who really wants Elly to overcome her problems. And most importantly of all is Elly, a clever young woman whose insecurities seem to come naturally from her life experiences but who makes real steps to overcome them through the course of the novel. The other characters also have real life in them and promise more for future novels in this series.

The book is consistently funny, sweet and romantic. The immediacy and strength of Rory and Elly's feelings is even integrated as a significant plot element - is this true love or just magic gone wrong? There is a lovely underlying philosophy of magic, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Romantic comedy with witchcraft. 13 Dec. 2013
By Helen
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a light and fluffy girly book. It is the kind of book that is called zany and kooky. These are words that tell me I will find it irritatingly juvenile, which I did. My personal preferences aside, it is well written and amusing. There is an inherent sweetness and innocence about the characters that I xuspect is shared by the author. I didn't love the book but if they enjoy this kind of story, many others probably will.

2.0 out of 5 stars No magic for me! 28 Nov. 2013

I'm 69% of the way through this book and struggling. The heroine is 28 going on 18. The story is thin and I am fast losing interest. The major mix-up by her friend that caused all the trouble in the first place was forgiven all too easily and brushed under the carpet. No-one is that forgiving!
It strikes me as the kind of book that people much younger than I would enjoy, the two main female leads having a teenage like mentality.
It is fast moving and at times I'm almost breathless at it's pace, but that still doesn't make it a good read. I have no criticism of the author's skill, because clearly she can write, but I just don't like the content, the story is weak and I'm afraid a bit silly.
I'm not a quitter with books and am forcing myself to see it out, but judging from some other reviews,it might be a waste of time.
The title suggests a series but sorry, I won't be reading any more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacks substance 11 Aug. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book based on the reviews as people seemed to have enjoyed reading it. I am glad I didn't pay for it - it started off with promise but went nowhere fast; I kept reading in the hope that something was going to happen but nothing did except what you know ultimately will - a long boring road to reaching an inevitable conclusion. Sorry.

Sweet, bit syrupy here and there, and as lightweight as the heroine's home-made cakes. Not a tale that provokes thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighthearted and fun! 20 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Take; baking, running a cafe from scratch, small-town America, hunky guys, a grandmother who was a witch, an investigator from the National Organization of Magic, spells that go wrong and have to be set right. You get the idea. Screwy but fun. And you just know it's all going to turn out all right in the end, so just sit back, brew yourself something from bats' wings and newts' tails in the cauldron, put your black cat on your lap, and enjoy the harmless fun!
