Product Description

Review
"W. P. Kinsella plays with both myth and fantasy in his lyrical novel, which was adapted into the enormously popular movie, 'Field of Dreams.' It begins with the magic of a godlike voice in a cornfield, and ends with the magic of a son playing catch with the ghost of his father. In Kinsella's hands, it's all about as simple, and complex, as the object of baseball itself: coming home. Like Ring Lardner and Bernard Malamud before him, Kinsella spins baseball as backdrop and metaphor, and, like his predecessors, uses the game to tell us a little something more about who we are and what we need."

Synopsis
Ray Kinsella's fanatic love of baseball drives him to build a baseball stadium in his corn field and kidnap the author, J.D. Salinger, and bring him to a baseball game.

4.0 out of 5 stars shoeless joe, 22 Feb 2005
Shoeless joe is a finely woven tale of passion, dreams and redemption. The theme of baseball is merely a backdrop for a magical glimpse of life and american culture the author Kinsella uses to to portray the life of iowa farmer ray kinsella, who upon hearing the omninous voice of a baseball announcer is inspired to build a baseball field on his farm. A fine sub-plot involving reclusive american author J.D Salinger and past baseball greats kinsella threads these together to create a story with elements of the cosmic, intrigue, humour and tender human emotion, without divulging the reader with foreign baseball technicalities and jargon. An original and beautfully written book. Well recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shoeless Joe...good, but not one of the greats, 13 Feb 2004
By Mark (England) - See all my reviews
Alot of you will know of this book as a result of the Kevin Costner film 'Field of Dreams' and it is worth reading this book even just to compare the two. Kinsella's novel captures the same magic that is contained in the movie and shows a real passion for baseball's place in American culture over the last 100+ years. The book is written well, but there are points at which Kinsella doesn't go into enough detail, the most obvious example is the first page! but this may be due to the fact that I saw the movie first. This book is definetely a worthwhile read whether you are a baseball fan or not because it doesn't contain much baseball terminology that some baseball books can go over the top with. This is also a fascinating read for anyone who is interested in 20th century American culture. The inclusion of JD Salinger is one of the most interesting concepts in the book, because in real life he was a famously reclusive figure.
Really good read, but not a great novel of american literature

1.0 out of 5 stars Watch the film(Field of Dreams) and leave the book to the Americans
Well it's supposed to be about dreams, magic, life and not about baseball...wrong it's about baseball and an American understanding that baseball is a way to unlock dreams, magic,... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars ALL OVER THE PLACE
Nothing like the movie. Not a great writer. One good idea done in a fairly lifeless way.
