Its difficult to believe that this book was first published in the 60's. Or perhaps I cannot believe how little the genre has aged since then. The language is far superior to most of what is published currently, showing a kind of precision that is completely lacking from feted modern authors, which for one, I particularly love.

Although I would read it for the style alone the plot is actually rather good and original. Not a single demise due to an "unfortunate carriage accident" in sight. The heroine is a widow and the hero is a fratricide. The action is set in an ancient country manor ruled by despotic old lord who attempts to arrange all his subjects' lives according to his fancy.

This is the first book by this author but I hear that she wrote rather a lot so I will be returning for more.
