HASH(0x9cd3ae70) out of 5 stars A fun, engaging book. 29 Mar. 2011
By B - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
I thought this book was really great, it's the second in the Guardian Angelino series and it grabbed me as much as the first. I really loved the suspense part of the book, I just couldn't put the book down until I was done because I just had to know what would happen next. It's set in Ireland with a very real and current story that could be right out of the news. The relationship develops slowly and it's very believable and tense, especially because the two characters have different goals, but they need each other to accomplish them. The hero, Marc, is a dream...funny, sexy and smart. And Devyn has deep emotional issues that really touched my heart. But in this book, the mystery and suspense are just as compelling as the romance. The action is non-stop and the twists and turns in the story are the kind that make you gasp out loud. And all the secondary characters - Vivi, Chessie, Uncle Nino, and even Agent Lang -- are essential for the story and just as much fun in this book as they were in the first. I truly love them all and I am so excited that Vivi's book is next and will be out in a month!

HASH(0x9cd3f294) out of 5 stars terrific romantic suspense 1 April 2011
By Harriet Klausner - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Devyn Hewitt Sterling remains shell shocked that her husband was a criminal who betrayed her. She is happy he is dead. Though raised by kind adopted parents, she wishes to know her biological parents. Sometimes you get what you she wish for as she learns who her birth father is; a fugitive.

As she thinks the acorn does not fall far from the tree, she travels to Belfast to warn her biological mother Dr. Sharon Greenberg that she could be in danger. Former FBI agent turned Guardian Angelino operative Marc Rossi is assigned to find and bring her home for their client the feds, but prefers keeping her safe in between kisses.

The second Guardian Angelinos romantic suspense (see Edge of Sight) is a terrific thriller as the lead coupling brings freshness to what would otherwise be a typical sub-genre frolic. Marc believes honesty is the only way to forge a relationship while Devyn fears telling him the truth will abort their relationship before it can get off the ground. Neither trusts the other, but the key to this taut thriller is not the lead pair, but her biological mom who is the target of her daughter, the Feds and some sleazy terrorists for differing reasons.

HASH(0x9cd3f30c) out of 5 stars Just as good as the first 1 April 2011

This is the second book in Roxanne St. Claire's Guardian Angelinos series. Sometimes while reading a series, the second book is always the weakest link. I'm happy to say that this is NOT the case here. I loved Marc and Devyn's story! It was every bit as compelling as the first installment. Plus, it's set in Ireland (which I love). If you want top notch romantic suspense, then this is the book for you. I can't wait till Vivi's story, which is the next book coming out later this month!

HASH(0x9cd3f0b4) out of 5 stars Never Saw the End Coming 26 April 2011
By Kindle Customer - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
This is only the second book by Ms. St. Claire I've ever read (Edge of Sight being my first), and it was just okay for me.

I didn't really like the interaction between Marc and Devyn (both characters introduced to us in Edge of Sight) and I confess that my primary reason for getting this book was to get more of Samantha and Zach.

*****************ABOUT SHIVER OF FEAR*****************
After Devyn's husband is murdered and all his secrets and lies are made public, and Devyn is feeling alone and betrayed, she goes on a quest to track down her birth mother. Her quest takes her to Northern Ireland.

Marc Rossi, former FBI agent and current member of the Guardian Angelinos, is hired by the FBI to track down Devyn and get her out of Ireland without revealing himself to her.

He finds Devyn, but oh so quickly she realizes that their meeting was no happenstance and confronts Marc, and he goes ahead and admits that he was hired to get her out of town. I guess this part bothered me more than the writer may have intended, because I don't get how a guy with all of his training and experience does the one thing that he was expressly told not to do, and that is to reveal himself and his motives. He did that with such frightening ease, I just couldn't understand how he ever worked successfully as a federal agent.

Anyway, Devyn refuses to leave until she finds her birth mother, especially when said mother starts sending her messages about wanting to see her and needing her help. So the both of them start scouring northern ireland in their search and keep getting attacked and shot at along the way.

*********************************SEMI-SPOILER ALERT*********************

I have to say that Devyn and Marc's relationship did absolutely nothing for me. It was the story within the story that had me turning the pages, and oh my goodness, I don't think I would have ever (not in a million years) seen that denouement coming. I just never would've thought that the villain was who it actually turned out to be. It was kind of like Kevin Spacey in 'The Usual Suspects' where the mastermind was the least likely person. The funny thing is that I usually look for the least likely suspect in a novel or movie, and it always turns out to be that person, so I'm usually disappointed, and yet, for some reason, it just never crossed my mind that the villain was who it turned out to be. So kudos to RSC for having me so thoroughly fooled. 3 stars for that, but I couldn't give a 4 or 5 star review because this was supposed to be a romantic suspense, and while the suspense part was in full force, I found the romance to be lacking.

HASH(0x9cd3f7d4) out of 5 stars So easy to become immersed... 2 Sept. 2011
By Smitten with Reading - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
My Review:
Overall I really enjoyed this book. Roxanne St. Claire has such an amazing writing voice. I love the way that she puts a book together and the huge cast of characters that she builds up in this world. Really well done and well-written. From page one, she had my full attention and it never wandered far until the book was finished. I love getting immersed in a world to this extreme!

Set in Ireland, this book has a very different feel than the first book had, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It made the two stories very distinctive from each other which sometimes becomes an issue in a series like this, so I liked that about it. Another thing that set this book far apart from the first was Marc. He's a former FBI agent. He knows what he's doing and is fully trained to do the job. It gave a different feel than from dealing with Zach and Vivi who are still working to learn the security field.

That brings us to the things that are the same in this second book from the first...the family! I love this family...every single one of them. We didn't get to see as much of them in this installment, but when they did show up, the scenes were complete perfection. The family dynamic with the Angelino's and Rossi's....ah, I just love it! The other thing that rocked in this book once again...the suspense!! OMG, I did NOT see all the twists and turns coming. I just kept gasping out loud. That is so awesome in a suspense book and definitely the sign of a good one!

Finally, we need to chat about the romance between Devyn & Marc. I really adored Marc's character. Honestly, what's not to love? He's charming. He's good-looking. He packs a gun and is willing to place his body in front of a bullet for the heroine. He has amazing integrity. And yes, his heart is more than a little wounded because once upon a time, he fell in love with the wrong have to love that little bit of vulnerability. I had a harder time with Devyn and that is probably because through so much of the story, she honestly was having a hard time accepting herself and where she belongs. So much of her self-worth was tied up in making a connection with her mother. On the one hand, I could understand that a bit, but I think that she became too obsessed in defining herself by her DNA. I just had a hard time relating to that part of her character, although my heart ached for her throughout so much of this book. Her internal pain is palpable and heartbreaking. The sexual tension between these two was so immense. They both have reasons for avoiding an entanglement and I was beginning to wonder if it was ever really going to happen, but this is a romance novel, so... It's all good...VERY GOOD!! ;o)

And now I am going to stop writing because I cannot wait to dig into book #3...finally Vivi's book and it looks like she is paired up with Agent Lang. Oh my! There are going to be huge fireworks in that book. I can't wait!!
