Book Description

5 Oct 2009
Grace is fascinated by the wolves in the woods behind her house; one yellow-eyed wolf in particular. Every winter, she watches him, but every summer, he disappears. Sam leads two lives. In winter, he stays in the frozen woods, with the protection of the pack. In summer, he has a few precious months to be human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again. When Grace and Sam finally meet, they realize they can't bear to be apart. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human - or risk losing himself, and Grace, for ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 23 July 2009
By TeensReadToo TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Years ago, Grace was attacked by a starving wolf pack, and only survived because one wolf, the one with brilliant yellow eyes, protected her. Ever since then she's watched for "her" wolf each winter, caught in a longing she can't quite explain. Then one fall a boy appears on her porch, injured, with those same yellow eyes. Grace knows he is her wolf.

Grace feels more connected to Sam than anyone else in her life, and Sam would do anything for her. But right from the beginning, a shadow looms over their time together. As the weather gets colder, it's harder and harder for Sam to stay human. And he's sure that this time, when he turns into a wolf, it will be for good.

SHIVER is a melancholy, romantic novel with equal parts tenderness and passion. Readers will find themselves swept up in Grace and Sam's unfolding relationship as they are finally able to talk and touch, and struggle to hold on to what little time they have together. The book is filled with gorgeous imagery that comes alive in your mind, and adds to the sense of fleeting beauty.

Some may find the story a little slow-moving: many of the scenes are simply Grace and Sam being together, and of the few subplots that increase the suspense, all but one are dropped with little or no resolution. But the book is well worth picking up just for the character study of a boy growing up torn between human and animal worlds, and the main characters' chemistry and frantic attempts to hold off Sam's change will keep appreciative readers glued to the page.

Recommended for paranormal fans who prefer thoughtfulness and simmering emotion to action and violence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Move over Edward 28 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
Firstly, this book has changed my whole outlook on the young adult genre, yep, it really is that good. I am going to attempt to put my feelings into words, but everything that is coming into my mind, falls shy of describing my experience and impressions of this book. I just hope my review goes someway in giving the book and author the justice they deserve. If I go off on a tangent, I apologise.

The female protagonist Grace is an independent seventeen year old junior. Six years ago, she was attacked by a pack of wolves in the woods near her home. During this time, to distance herself from the attack, she focuses her attention on one particular wolf, a wolf with strange yellow eyes. Over the coming years, she watches this wolf from a distance, and he too watches her. What Grace doesn't realize at first is that the wolf has a name "Sam", and also a human body, but only when the temperature rises above a certain degree. It seems to me that this is Grace's coming of age, as she discovers herself and learns more about the mysterious wolves.

SHIVER is told from both Grace's and Sam's perspective and their voices are so unique and beautiful, that not once whilst reading this extraordinary novel, did I have to check the chapter page to see who was telling the story. The story is beautiful in it seamlessness, the plot and characters come together in perfect harmony, with epic amounts of emotion, without being too much. Like LAMENT, the prose is so poetic, I found myself full of envy at how Stiefvater can make writing seem so perfect. The love story is so believable and powerful, the saying "Love can overcome anything" rings true with this tale. The bar on supernatural romance has been raised, so other authors beware!

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it 3 Mar 2010
By Sian Louise VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I really really enjoyed this book.
This was on my recommendations list and I had it on my wishlist, when I saw it come available on Amazon Vine I couldnt believe my luck.
This book lived up to what I was expecting, I couldnt put it down.
I just loved the main characters of Grace and Sam, following their story and their love, it was just so good to read and at the end I found myself get a little teary.
I havent got anything negitive to say only thing I would have liked it to have learnt more about the other wolves and especially Beck and Shelby.
I hope there will be other books about all of these characters, maybe forming a series.

I don't want to say it really because I know how much some people hate comparing books to others, but I do think people, mainly teenage girls will love this book if they loved the Twilight series.

Things I liked:

- the concept of werewolves turning when it gets cold. It's a somewhat unique idea that I haven't heard before, and it makes everything more urgent than a simple 'moon transformation' as any day could be a chilly one!
- The connection between Sam and Grace is incredibly heart warming...if a bit creepy she was practically in love with a wolf at first!
- the front cover! ( had to mention it =D )
- the characters have some depth to them and have minds of their own!
- the action that was included was good

things I didn't like so much:

- incredibly slow paced compared to other books I have read in the past. Left me getting bored after a while.
- Not much explanation into the werewolves....well not enough for me anyway xD
- Pretty unrealistic in places...apart form the werewolves thing
- Love story a bit TOO convenient? I don't like 'love at first sight =.=' even if he was a wolf when she 'fell in love'...I like a development of feelings.
- Hardly any action at all.
- Not enough of that white wolf!! ( read and you'll know what I mean! ) she came around about 2 or 3 times and she is explained but she never turns up again!

If you're happy with slow and steady, and like a nice romance, then this is for you! If you want hard core action and high speed narration then it isn't xD I am in between the 2 so I give this 3 stars!
