Phantom Buffalo (formerly the Ponys) is an very innovative band that hails from here in Portland, Maine (USA). Shishimumu, their first album, is an amazing collection of enchanting songs that have that rare quality of being easily familiar but also intriguingly complex - poppy and profound at the same time. This is a CD that will be at the top of your pile, that you'll take with you, that you'll want to share... that made me want to write this review. Try it - you'll love it.

Why haven't I heard more about this band? They really should be better known, as this is a superb LP. A couple of the tracks are beautiful instrumentals un the vein of Godspeed! or Explosions In The Sky. The instrumentation is kept simple and there is just a beautiful clean guitar ringing out a plangent melody over shuffling bass and drums. The tracks with vocals on them have striking and vivid lyrics. The vocals sound British and have a whimsicality that reminds me of the Gorky's, Belle and Sebastian and Final Fantasy, but the music beneath is much more muscular and organic than Belle and Seb would ever be. It's poppy but ebbs, flows and twists like Built to Spill or Karate. This is a great LP!
