Shirley Valentine-Bradshaw has always been able to see the funny side of any situation. She was a high school rebel and now she's a housewife and mother who one day looks back at her life and realises that she has lost touch with her dreams. Shirley Valentine is a wonderful film, a bittersweet comedy that deserves repeated viewings, and a film I'd really looked forward to getting on DVD. The version on this disc is cropped from Widescreen, losing picture information on either side (as was the VHS release). But worst of all, this dvd uses a dubbed US print, meaning that all the words that wouldn't be understood in the US have been dubbed. It is very distracting, but most of all kills the jokes - e.g. "MFI" is replaced with "K-Mart". Very disappointing, and shows a real disregard for the product by Paramount. Stick with the VHS - at least that has the original film on it. 5 stars for the film, but zero for the dvd.

Firstly let me say that this is a great British film, however Paramount have commited a horrible sin in releasing the DVD version that has been dubbed to "Americanise" some of the language. I totally echo the sentiments of my fellow reviewer except that 3 stars is too high, Paramount with any conscience should not have released this dubbed DVD to the UK public.....shocking

Firstly... this is a wonderful film. A great British comedy which both BAFTA and the American Academy chose to honour. The wonderful things about this film have been well documented in other reviews. Reviews may I add that refer to the VHS version of the film. And that is where your gaze should still be focussed. The distributors of this DVD have criminally given us a dubbed US version (ruining some of the best jokes), haven't bothered to give us the widescreen version and the print is abysmal. My 12 year old VHS copy is as good quality. Such a disappointment. I was eager to get this to add one of my most treasured films to my DVD collection. This is just not fair!

Pauline Collins is excellent at winning our hearts in this male-written slushfest about how marriage disempowers women. The Greek scenes are beautifully photographed. Read more
