Review

Willy Russell's plays... speak to even the critical heart.' Libby Purves, The Times, 28.07.10 'When Shirley blossoms on her sneakily planned Greek holiday, her feminimity unfurls disarmingly, and there are moments of pathos throughout.' Henry Hitchings, Evening Standard, 28.07.10 'You peer into these windows onto other lives, and see your own world partially reflected back at you. Highly recommended.' Dominic Cavendish, Daily Telegraph, 29.07.10 --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

The filmscript – specially adapted by Willy Russell into a full-length play.  Shirley Valentine has no one to talk to but the kitchen wall.  Surely there’s more to life than egg and chips on Tuesdays and steak on Thursdays?  On a Greek island, husband left behind, her dream of escape turns into reality.

The play itself is about smart-mouthed Liverpudlian housewife Shirley Bradshaw, who, trapped in her own empty nest and a mundane marriage, heads to Spain and meets a charming waiter, with whom she embarks upon an affair. Willy Russell's unconvential heroine and her even more unlikely beau were swiftly brought to the screen by Pauline Collins and Tom Conti in a successful film adaptation, but the story is much more suited to the stage, and this edition of the script is as good as any; suitable for students and amateur theatre companies alike, with a decent binding and film tie-in cover.

This is the script of the film, not of the stage play. It has some good disscusion on the themes and style of the script. I loved the film so obviously i loved this too.

If you're a frustrated housewife or fearing to become one you'll love this one woman play. Hey, who of us has never felt like speaking to the kitchen wall ? Shirley tells it about all her problems and her dream of going to Greece. And in the end all turns out nicely.
