Shirley Temple took dance lessons at the age of three at Meglin's Dance School in Los Angeles and was spotted by Charles Lamont, a casting director from Educational Pictures. Although Shirley hid behind a piano whilst in the studio, Lamont took a shine to Shirley, invited her to audition and subsequently signed her to a contract. Educational Pictures were just about to launch their series of Baby Burlesks, a series of short films that satirized recent films and political events, with pre-school children in every role. Since the children were dressed as adults and given mature dialogue the entire series was eventually seen as dated and exploitive, although not before they had made a major star out of Shirley Temple. Shirley would go on to appear in many full length feature films, further enhancing her reputation, but the original shorts, featured here and in a second volume, illustrate perfectly why she was the biggest child star of the 1930s. War Babies Charmaine is entertaining soldiers at a bar, but two will eventually become rivals for her. Kid In Africa Madam Cradlebait comes face to face with a tribe of cannibals. Dora s Dunking Donuts Schoolteacher Andy Clyde helps his friend Dora by getting his students to help him to make a radio commercial for her store. Pardon My Pups Mary Lou s older brother Sonny is hoping to get a motorcycle for his birthday but father has different ideas a dog that the father can take hunting! Format:DVD
The first two titles appear to be from the Baby Burlesks series.
Reviews I'd seen in some biographies led me to expect these to be fuzzy and of poor quality. The reality came as a pleasant surprise therefore. Although not the best transfers I've seen (some frames have been combined into one and the title screens to War Babies have been cropped) they are still very acceptable. Shirley shows an innocence not so apparent in her later films.
The second two titles are shorts in which adults play the leading roles.
Despite not having the leading role, Shirley does play a significant part in each, demonstrating an acting ability that many adult actors could wish for. She especially shines in the role of the singer/dancer of the child "jazz" band in Dora's Dunking Donuts.
Overall, this was a very pleasant surprise, one I'm pleased to add to my collection.
(Note that this is the first of the 3 DVDs in the box set, the others being the Shirley Temple Collection Volume 2 and The Little Princess.)

20th century fox have done a great job on these dvds.the clourised versions are excellent.a great buy for all shirley fans.

Adorable Shirley Temple, in some short films in which she starred at the age of only 3, knew her lines and was definitely acting. She just amazed me and she was good at what she was doing even then. The little films were corny by our standards but held me, as I found her talent shining through at such a young age, and uplifting too. What a little trooper, she makes me feel good just as soon as I see her and when she speaks or sings I fill up a bit. Totally recommend it would be shame for anyone to miss out on her in this collection.
