Book Description

30 May 2010
The ShipCraft series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. This volume follows the format of the highly successful Flower Class where the extent has been doubled to include far more detailed drawings of the many different designs of British MTBs and US PT-boats, including their fittings, sensors and weapons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another splendid ShipShape Special ! 12 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have the previous ShipShape Special on the Flower class and bought this hoping it would be equally good.

It is !

I feel this book provides probably the best summary of both British and American development I've seen, with photos and details I've not seen before of many of the experimental and prototype boats.
One small quibble is that the "long" boats - Fairmiles etc, are not covered. But having only limited pages it was probably better to give a full view of the "short " boats than try to cover all fast coastal boats in a more sketchy fashion.

The photos are well reproduced on good heavy glossy paper, and in most cases the selection good.
Excluding the modelling section there are over sixty photos of whole ships, varying from half page to quite small, six being in colour. These are well complemented by about fifty onboards, inboards, weapons and construction shots, a few in colour. The model section has numerous photos - all in colour.

There is an abundance of excellent plans and general arrangements of boats and equipment, many profusely annotated. The scale of many of these is too small for easy use without a good magnifying glass but as the book indicates larger versions of most of the plans are available from Lambert Plans.

Colour profiles showing assorted camouflage schemes occupy two whole pages, some giving both profiles, and even a plan view in four cases..

There is a small number (3) of tables giving brief details of some classes and but no actual class lists. However the main text provides much of this and it is available elsewhere although the two page bibliography and source list are somewhat limited.

The number of pages devoted to modelling is 27 out of the total 128. These cover virtually every plastic kit from 1/1200 to 1/24th scale. They are confined to the middle of the book.

If you are a modeller - very well worth buying
If you are a non-modeller - still very well worth buying.
