Book Description

20 Sep 2010
In 'Vers Une Architecture', published in the mid 1920s, Le Corbusier wrote about the inspiring qualities of the external design forms of Cunard's Aquitania. Since then nautical design inspired a great deal of innovative architecture on terra firma. Simultaneously, the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs made a broad range of eclectic modern styles fashionable - particularly in the commerical world, whereas Modernism with a capital M, already the design aesthetic of the pre-Stalinist Soviet Union, was associated with social reform, internationalism and a Marxist ideology. In passenger ship design, however, the picture was complicated by a variety of factors. According to Orwell, ships were seen to represent utopian visions of future paradises - and so represented the ideals of Modernism perhaps more effectively than any structure on dry land ever could. On the other hand they were equally powerful statements of imperialism and of commercial pride. This book will examine the development of the Modern Movement in passenger ship architecture in the twentieth century, ranging from small excursion vessels to liners, cruise ships, ferries, and, where necessary, freight vessels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ship shape 15 Oct 2011
By Soane
Format:Hardcover
An excellent addition to the existing corpus of recent well-researched and engaging publications about twentieth-century maritime history. Philip Dawson and Bruce Peter, both more than qualified for the task, have - like John Maxtone Graham - produced a highly readable, but admirably accessible account of the establishment and development of Modernism at sea.

Where Dawson and Peter excell, however, is in their simple premise that Modernism in art and design can be understood at two levels: philosophical and aesthetic. The latter is more easily understood and the reader is aided by huge number of sumptuous illustrations. The former is more obscure, but expertly discussed in a series of chapters; the most interesting being 'Facism and the Modern Liner', which draws together rather disparate strands of research and applies them successfully to a carefully constructed argument about the influence of Italian and German facism on ship design.

This book is a well-researched and beautifully presented study of Modernism at sea and is essential reading for anyone interested in modern design or maritime history.

This book is beautifully illustrated. There are many pictures of ships I have never seen before. This is a very good book for people interested in Art Deco and Mid-Century Design.

5.0 out of 5 stars An In Depth Study 4 Mar 2011

This book is wonderful with a focus on how ships have evolved from one kind of fitting out design to where they are today. It is a decent book for the price and any interior architecture student would find this most helpful in his/her studies. There is even a bit about the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes included, which was the inspiration for L'Atlantique and Normandie. There are some very nice photos unpublished in any of my many other Ocean Liner books, which includes some beautiful promotional travel posters. I love this book.
3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant 26 Jan 2013

The images are often beautiful with an occasional repeat of what I've seen many times in other books. I found the reading to be interesting but often tedious as the author's colorless writing is more lecture than inspiration. The primary focus of the print is the subject of the virtues of modern art and various art movements of the 20th century. The subject of modern art as it applies to passenger shipping is indeed the announced theme of the book, so perhaps I shouldn't complain (but there it is). Dull as dishwater to read but with occasional fresh nuggets of information that brighten up the drone. I'm fully capable of appreciating classical literature and non fiction history and science but I bought this book for easy reading that conveyed the ambiance of shipboard and lots of great pictures. The three stars relate to the latter and decidedly -not- the former, based on my expectation/experience.
