How the "Wooden Walls" were designed and built, 5 Nov 2006
This review is from: The Ship of the Line: Design, Construction and Fittings v.2: Design, Construction and Fittings Vol 2 (Conway's history of sail) (Hardcover)
This is the second part of Brian Lavery's massive work on the development of the sailing navy ships of Nelson's era, sometimes referred to as England's "Wooden Walls".
Where the first book gave the story of how the demands of various wars forced the development of navy warships, this book concentrates on the details of design and construction.
Like the first book, it is extensively illustrated, mostly in black and white, with contemporary paintings, photographs of contemporary ship models, plans and charts.
Perhaps too specialist a work for the average reader, but accessible enough to be an interesting read for anyone with a strong interest in naval history.
