Product Description

Product Description

In the year 610AD a diplomatic mission from Kent seeks to bring the light of Christ to a pagan Dark Age kingdom. But things do not go smoothly, particularly for the priest of the Kentish party when he finds himself entangled in a strange and dangerous web involving the ruthless Kentish Ambassador and a lowly but spirited maid of the oxen. Not far from the halls of King Radwald and his enigmatic queen, the Lady Ealhhild, a boy in an Anglian village prepares for his rite of passage. When he trespasses on the sacred island of his people he discovers that fate no longer seems in his own hands. An intriguing Anglo-Saxon tale of romance and realpolitik with implications for our own time. 'These struggles between the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms ... would eventually result in the formation of England. The kings involved are often described as 'petty' ... Few I'm sure would have the courage to describe Radwald as such if they were to meet him. The trappings of Sutton Hoo show clearly that by the time of his death at least, he was a man of considerable wealth and power. The marriage of Athelbert to the Frankish Bertha, who was already a Christian, and the subsequent Augustinian mission to Kent in the year 597 must be one of the most significant events in English history.' From the preface.

From the Publisher

A gripping and evocative tale of political and sexual intrigue in Dark Age Britain.

magical runes 15 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Here is an enchanting tale, set in the dark and changing world of the seventh century. As the blurb suggests, our own times reflect changes in religious belief, shifts of power and testing of morality, however remote we think we are from this period.
The author focuses on the simple folk whose lives are affected by the actions, decisions and beliefs of those who rule them - though these rulers are significant, too.
We are immersed in evocative, almost poetical description, like the runic verse which underlies this work... words have magical powers, and we share the fears, despair and love of those caught up in the dangerous situations of the period. This is skilful writing.

The Rune of Ing 3 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
An evocative tale of the Early Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms by an author with an obvious passion and knowledge for the period that he shares with the reader. I must admit that I read through the book within hours of opening it and very much wanted it to continue, and I eagely look forward to the next title.

Amazing creation of Anglo-Saxon village life. Brings the characters to life in a remarkable way. Enjoyed it very much. Made me want to visit West Stow again. The historical and imaginary characters blend beautifully leaving you wanting to know more as the plot thickens.
