Book Description

30 April 2012 Cruise Confidential
In his bestselling debut tell-all Cruise Confidential, cruise ship insider Brian David Bruns revealed why he was the only American in Carnival Cruise Lines history to complete a full eight-month contract in their restaurants. Returning with his award-winning wit and delightfully candid narrative voice, Brian brings us the first and only expose of art auctioneering on the mighty liners, where the tenet of ‘what happens at sea, stays at sea’ has always been observed—until now. Ship for Brains takes on cruise ship art auctioneers, a society brimming with odd personalities drawn to the stress and isolation that invariably lead to alcohol and a Hell-may-care attitude. According to Bruns, “They willingly give up home and family in favor of high-paced, crushing sales goals demanded while port-hopping from nation to nation; art auctioneers are undermined by the lash of tyrannical ship officers, unforgiving gallery managers, hyena-like trainers, and a skeptical public. The burn-out rate is phenomenal—but when it works, you are king of the world.” Brian’s true-life struggle turns both harrowing and hilarious when goaded by the lecherous but mighty auctioneer Bill Shatner, and he must navigate sexy dancers and their all-to-intimate cliques, the slapstick schemes of his mentors, and the seduction of success, all while staying true to his girl and himself. We are transported from the Caribbean to the Pacific and Costa Rica to Transylvania as our likable guide vividly describes his many misadventures, triumphs, flirtations, and, above all, his amusing and astute insights into human nature. Ship for Brains—this ain’t no galley tour.

About the Author

Brian David Bruns is a best-selling and award-winning author whose books have been lauded by the Travel Channel, Today Show, and USA Today, among other prestigious publications. Brian's Cruise Confidential book series—by the only American in the history of Carnival Cruise Lines to endure a full contract in the ships’ restaurants—earned his being featured in ABC’s 20/20 special edition, the aptly-named “Cruise Ship Confidential,” seen by 7.61 million viewers. When not writing Brian strives for adventure. He has traveled to 50 nations, biked the 500 miles across his native state of Iowa, bagged a bunch of America’s most prominent peaks, and run some decidedly off-the-wall marathons. His latest passion is for the mayhem of obstacle-filled mud runs. By far the best, however, is hiking with his wife of five years, Aurelia. They currently live in Las Vegas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the earlier books but still good. 15 May 2014

Bought this book as a gift and, having read the authors other books, the recipient immediately seemed very happy with it. Once read, he confirmed it was as enjoyable as he thought it would be, but not quite as good as the earlier ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought on a whim, really enjoyed it. 26 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Bought this on a complete whim as I'd just read the Imogen-Jones "confidential" books and it came up on a linked search.

I really enjoyed his style of writing and story telling - so much so that I ordered the other two in the series that he'd written. Fascinating insight into the inner workers of cruises (not that I've ever been on one or that it is an interest of mine) and you do get involved with the characters and development of the author's career.

Some photos would have been good to be able to visualise the different people/places/ships and I'm not sure how his writing would translate into other topics i.e. he obviously had a really interesting period in his life but if he goes on to write other books, will he have sufficient enough material to make those as interesting?

I would definitely recommend these books.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE This Book 6 July 2011
By PJP - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read Brian's original book and when I found myself with medical leave on my hands I browsed my Kindle for another good read. I was delighted to see Brian had a second book about the cruise ship world. Not only did I learn about art but I followed Brian's trials and tribulations with glee and outright laughter. My husband kept asking me to read out loud the parts that were making me laugh so much. I would get my smart phone out and Google the paintings and ports of call that were being mentioned. It's as if I was on the ship with Brian. I was fortunate enough to take one cruise with friends years back and they purchased a painting. I was
intrigued by the process then but now I know exactly how that process works. Please also check out Brian's website because the reader can see photographs of many of the people in the book. It just makes a great read even more interesting.
I highly recommend this book to those who cruise (and the first book also by the way) and those who armchair travel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Same Song Second Verse 2 Nov 2011
By Hadlock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought Cruise Ship Confidential which I found insightful and interesting. Left me wanting more so I looked for another and "behold" Ship for Brains was here. I wanted to learn about the Art sales on ships and wanted to learn more about his relationship development. A VERY QUICK read (supposedly 422 pages but I don't think so). Read it in about a day. Lots of typos. Is this an electronic self-published book? The information about the art sales industry was interesting but the rest of the book was about all the easy sex and how our hero valiantly avoided succumbing to constant temptation (despite flirting with every attractive woman he met) to preserve himself for his distant girlfriend. He comes across as self-absorbed and self-indulgent. The book comes across as a formula repeat of the first one and leaves any mention of the development of his relationship out of the book. I can only assume that there is a third sequel in store. Light fare but a bit of an insult to the reader. Entertaining to read but I left feeling a bit cheated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great followup to Cruise Confidential. 7 Oct 2011

Brian does a great followup to Cruise Confidential. He shows that even though he is moving up in the cruise industry it does not come without trials and tribulations. If you are interested in working on cruise ships or just plain cruising this is a great read. Looking forward to his next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book By Brian David Bruns 10 July 2011
By C. Keller - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As an avid cruise fan--especially of Carnival cruises, I love Brian David Bruns' books. The look at how the crew lives is very enlightening and a bit depressing. In this book, Brian gives the reader a look at art auctions on cruise ships. I've admired the artwork on board, with absolutely no knowledge about it, but have never been to an art auction. I didn't realize that the ships auction some really good artwork. I learned something valuable by reading this book while being very entertained. Brian's description of art auction school and the life of an on-board auctioneer are eye-opening. All this is done, of course in Brian's witty, sometimes side-splitting way. I'm going on a 14 day cruise in November and will definitely pay more attention to the art. I might even go to an auction. Thanks Brian for a great read and a fun way to gain some knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Three Books Good Read 28 July 2013
By Howard Wiley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
He worked the ships and did different jobs. Not there to pump cruises as vacation, but to tell you how it is for the cruise. These books should be must read if you cruise...so you know how hard they work to make a 'cruiser" happy
