Book Description

20 Sep 2011
Shiny Thing gathers together nineteen of Patricia Russo's short stories, including four original, unpublished tales of magic and danger that will chill you to the bone. Russo's characters are people you know, yet they do things you would never expect, and within each story there is one shining thing that somehow changes them all. You know the old saying: all that glitters is not gold. Well sometimes, all that is gold does not glitter. In Shiny Thing, your life may depend on being able to tell the difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars "our world is hard, but there is still beauty in it" 6 Feb 2012
By Far-ranging Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The quote in the title line of this review is from the last story in the collection, "Frank, Stephanie, and Jimmy Popcorn," but it serves as a good tag for the collection as a whole. Russo's stories often unfold in urban wastelands, crumbling apartment buildings, or trash-strewn empty parking lots. The characters are about as far away from the glorious hero model as you can get. And yet, they answer the call of compassion and offer a helping ahand to those even more lost or desperate than they themselves are--whether to deliver a paper bag full of leaves to a certain alleyway or to write out a message on the backpack of a child heading into the great unknown. These stories surprise you with unexpected twists and turns, and yet are deeply satisfying (if occasionally terrifying). They're often painful and sometimes sad, but even more often, they fill you with a deep joy, the sort you'd have if you found a shiny thing that fit right in your hand, there in that alley where you brought your bag of leaves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the time. 4 Dec 2011
By Richard Schiver - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
You owe it to yourself to take a brief trip to Blue Street and The Triangle via the nineteen stories in this book. The writer paints a vivid image of a place where the occupants have learned to rely on no one but themselves in their daily struggle to survive. With a subtle voice she weaves stories that will stay with you long after you have put the book aside.

I am familiarized with Mrs. Russo's writing style and I love it. Her black humor is something else.... and this book is no exception.I am looking forward to her next publication.
