Amazonco.uk Review

Based on a novel by Susan Isaacs, Shining Through is uncomfortably close to Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious. This World War II drama concerns a love affair between a spy (Michael Douglas) and a secretary (Melanie Griffith) that goes south when duty turns him cold and pushes her into dangerous, behind-the-lines intelligence work. Liam Neeson plays the gentleman Nazi unwittingly providing Griffith with cover as domestic help. The best parts of the film are the twists and turns in the romance (Douglas is very good at playing a character who can turn off all feeling at will) at the beginning; the German scenes are less compelling despite such high stakes for the heroine. The climax--taking us back to Notorious whether it wants to or not--is quite gripping, largely due to Douglas's performance.--Tom Keogh

I love this movie!! It's got something for everyone! I am not a big fan of either Michael Douglas or Melanie Griffith, but they are perfect for the roles they play in this movie. I couldn't imagine any other actors in the same part.

For the romantics, there's the love story between Griffith and Douglas. For the war buffs, there's tons of WWII movie reels and actual footage of the war. For the people who like lots of action, there's plenty of that- planes, bombs, shooting, spying, chasing, suspense etc.... It's a great date movie because the ramance is balanced with action.

I am so glad this movie in finally available on DVD. I would recommend it to anyone looking for some different to watch.

I found this movie on a TV channel a few years ago and really enjoyed it. It's good to own the DVD now, which also has a couple of extras...including a small featurette.

On first appearances, yes, it looks very "budget movie", with dodgy sets, dodgy script, shakey acting in places and a wobbly storyline...BUT it is STILL a good movie to watch.

It has all the elements of undercover intelligence within Germany in WW2, with a light love story over the top of it. Add into the equation that Griffiths' character is also half-Jewish, it gives a little more grit to the story. Particular good points include Joely Richardson's performance; as good a woman semi-villain as you'll get anywhere. A good strong performance by Liam Neeson as a German General and also the fact John Gielgud plays a small part gives the movie some credit too.

It's a very simple story, slightly predictable, but you'll find the movie much better and more enjoyable than you think.

Shining Through 1 May 2009

Lovely film! WWII spy thriller/love story. If you love 1940s nostalgia and music you will love this film. Melanie Griffiths brilliantly portrays a spy who goes undercover as a housekeeper/nanny in a German household. When she's compromised and the net closes in, lover and boss, Michael Douglas rescues her to get her out of Germany.
