Biography

The great Scottish singer and song writer Jackie Leven passed away on Monday, 14th November, at 8 o'clock in the evening. He had suffered from cancer.
"There are spiritual story tellers and there are soulful story tellers. I hope to be a soulful story teller. I see the two kinds as two different directions. Spiritual is ascending. Sky, God and all that. I hope my story telling is going down into… Read more in Amazon's Jackie Leven Store

It is extremely difficult to understand why Jackie Leven is so little known on this island. This album is by far the best of his work thus far.
A classic example of Celtic soul whilst mixing poetic lyricism with the vocals and range so seldom heard.
What a mix of style and substance. The pounding opening track of 'Classic Northern Diversion' - Better driving music you will seldom hear.
The sonically upbeat, almost poppy, 'Irresistible romance' with a hook that I defy you not to hum.

'Savannah waltz' is the vehicle that allows this soul balladeer to fully exploit such a powerful voice.
'My philosophy' - a beautifully crafted work that shows the poetry of this guy's lyrics. I could rant about them all.
However don't let the blend of lyrics/poetry and the variety of hugely talented musicians working with this fife troubador be the only reasons for your purchase, add in the indescribably well engineered production on this album that just lifts this piece to another dimension.
The terribly hackneyed advice about only buying one album holds so true...

There are some musicians still prepared to work for a living and Jackie Leven is one of them.Words and tunes that you can take away and think about and a voice and guitar to make sure that you do.The production (by Jackie) is crammed with details.Poems and snatches of music bookend the songs.
The same coherence and attention to detail extends to the CD booklet.
In summary all the ingredients for a slow growing work of art.

Excellent Surround, Great Music 28 Aug 2010

Jackie Leven's intricate, stylistically diverse music is almost impossible to describe. Like David Ackles (a very different, but like Leven, nearly unknown and brilliant songwriter/singer), he is one-of-a-kind. His songs encompass blues, rock, folk, Scottish ballads, and many other musical genres. On top of that, Leven is a fine poet whose lyrics convey an unsentimental message of joy, despair, and heartbreak that will resonate with anyone who has spent much time on earth.

This is one of the good Silverline discs that boasts an immersive 5.1 mix (rather than a digitized rear speaker ambiance). One side is the CD, while the other side contains the 5.1 and 2.0 high resolution DVD-Audio (and Dolby Digital 5.1 for those who do not have a DVD-A player). Great songs, fine hi-res mix, and a low price make this a must-buy disc.
The sound of cognac 27 Mar 2012

I only recently heard of Jackie Leven and I bought this on the basis of a few live performances captured on youtube. He is another of those talents who is so damn good you wonder how come not everyone knows this guy. From the opening jaunty yet pulsating rhythms the album promises to take you on a journey. And having come through a dreamy road trip one enters a kind of urban soul-scape (which normally would not overly attract me - think Blue Nile), but with a voice this astonishing (yeah he is the kind of singer who just makes you think I will never open my mouth again)you think ok I will have a quite drink in the night club till we move on. Thankfully and brilliantly, it just keeps opening up, layer upon layer of poetry (interspersed with spoken voice poetry of sheer beauty recited by some celebrity friends) resting on gorgeous spreads of melody and the songs delivered by a voice so rich and warm and lived in. There is a marvelous sense of warmth and intelligence and compassion to the whole album that by its end you should have no doubt that this is one of those unsung masterpieces. The production is also exquisite. Normally I prefer the sound of whiskey, and ragged edges, but his is the voice of cognac. And it is an achingly beautiful truthful instrument drawing upon lyrics of power and thoughtfulness.
