Book Description

18 Aug 2012
A sensational account of Swansea City's 2011/12 season in the Premier League covering 12 months in the life of a Welsh football club that in 2003 was just 40 minutes away from extinction and relegation from the football league. Taking up the story where he left off at the end of Walking on Sunshine, Keith Haynes gives a vivid and passionate biographical account of Swansea City's first successful season in the Premier League. Playing with the top teams in England was never going to be easy, but under the expert guidance of manager Brendan Rodgers, Wales' top football side have shown they are more than capable of holding their own. This is a gripping follow-up to the best-selling title Swansea City 2010/11 - Walking on Sunshine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shine on indeed! 24 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
Shine on Swansea City delivers a honest, passionate, emotional and at times hilarious journey following The Swans in their debut season in the Premier League

Having enjoyed Keith's previous book, I already knew to a certain degree what to expect and was not let down. Excellently written and totally engrossing, the book touches on the history of the club, the darker days and it's meteoric rise.

With no holds barred opinions of the modern game, insight on agents, media, other clubs, managers, players. Tales of travels and memories past and a enthralling biographical account of his journey following Swansea City's debut Premier League season.

The passion and emotion shines through as you read. There are moments of pure comedy, of tradgedy and perspective.

If you're a football fan, even if your not a Swans fan, there will be much you can relate too. You'll laugh, you'll maybe cry and you will definately enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rollercoaster read for the thinking fan 4 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As with Keith's previous Book charting and emotionally embracing Swansea City's rise to the Premier League, "Shine On..." adopts the very-few-holds-barred approach to chronicling the Club's gradual ascent of the League, to the lofty heights of 11th place by season's end.
And it's none the worse for this: Keith's prose style is at times stream-of-consciousness, at times more studied and reflective, and always eminently readable, as he takes the reader along the footballing rollercoaster that was SCFC's 2011-12 season.

Where there is criticism to be levelled, Keith is never afraid to take aim and fire; those in the firing line will not enjoy reading some incisive home truths. Equally, where praise is due, it is given, even to the point where some judgements made in the last book are revisited and rethought.

You end this book feeling a little exhausted but extremely satisfied, as the emotional drama and the intense highs and lows of the season finally conclude in a victory over Liverpool, a fact not lost upon Swansea supporters in light of the events of this summer. All in all, it's an old-fashioned page-turner, a footballing adventure story as Swansea City defy the odds and David goes 38 rounds with Goliath and wins on points.

Highly recommended reading for the thinking football fan.

Firstly, in order to protect the innocent I should state that this is a review by Medwyn Williams and not my wife Caroline, as I appear not to have an Amazon account...

If you're a football fan and whether you follow Swansea City or not this is a great account of how it really is to follow a football team over the course of a season. It captures the highs and the lows and above all the passion, and the sometimes irrational and inexplicable emotions that football engenders in a way that the rest of life (thankfully in many ways!) simply doesn't. The strength of this book and in Keith's writing is that he tells it as it is, not how the mass media thinks and often portays it to be and simply ignores or completely don't get what it's like to have a love supreme that is your football club. The countless hours spent following, travelling and simply thinking about the irrelevant minutiae is captured here in a way that very few football books have ever acheived.

Don't be fooled into thinking that this is a book solely for Swansea City fans it's not, but then again if you're a Cardiff City fan then it MAY not be top of your reading "to do" list...

This new book takes up the story where 'Swansea City 2010/11: Walking on Sunshine' left off. The build-up to Swansea's appearance in the Premier League is told in Keith Haynes' inimitable style and there's plenty of fun and unfettered opinion on the way through the 2011/12 season, which was ultimately a great success for the club. A thoroughly recommended book, and it really is no-holds-barred stuff.
