Amazon.co.uk Review

Martin Scorsese leaps into the madness of the Rolling Stones’ organization in Shine a Light, barely controlling (in a most entertaining way) a documentary that culminates in the Stones’ best concert on film. The movie’s highly entertaining, pre-performance prologue finds a frazzled Scorsese trying to get a clue about the band’s plans for a very special New York City date in 2006, a benefit hosted by Bill and Hillary Clinton. While Mick Jagger quibbles over concepts for the stage’s set and peruses lists of possible songs to include in the show, Scorsese tries to figure out how to shoot something for which he has few production details. Everything falls into place eventually, and after an extraordinary meet-and-greet scene in which Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, and Charlie Watts catch up with the Clintons and sweetly introduce themselves to Hillary’s mom, the Stones launch into a set that leans less heavily than usual on their greatest hits canon.

Longtime fans are sure to appreciate the wealth of generally-untapped material from Let It Bleed ("You Got the Silver," "Live With Me"), Exile On Main Street ("All Down the Line," "Loving Cup"), and Some Girls ("Faraway Eyes," "Just My Imagination"). Jack White, Christina Aguilera and Buddy Guy are on hand for memorable collaborations, but the Stones all alone are truly on fire in the relatively intimate setting of a small theater. Among the highlights is a sexy and even thrilling call-and-response between Jagger and ace backup singer Lisa Fischer on "She Was Hot," Richards’ gracious and expansive solo on "Connection," and Jagger’s witty take on "Some Girls" (which manages to skip over the controversial verse about "black girls"). Throughout the show, Scorsese and an army of camera operators cover the action from every conceivable angle, which results not so much in another hyperkinetic concert film but rather in the kind of graceful, flattering portrayal of a great band that the director mastered with The Last Waltz. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

This is a fantastic concert film of The Stones' residence at The Beacon Theatre, New York, directed by Martin Scorcese

The film is a mix of documentary type clips of the making of the concert, from stage design to setlist, interspersed with archive footage of The Stones and a mixture of favourites and lesser known songs

The film is very much up close and personal and what comes across is how much The Stones seem to be enjoying themselves.

The highlights for me are Loving Cup (with Jack White), Little T&A, Satisfaction and Brown Sugar

This dvd is even better than the Theatre disc from The Four Flicks Stones dvd boxset

Buy it, turn it up and enjoy !

FANTASTIC! 13 Nov 2008
Format:Blu-ray
This really is what your BLU-RAY is ment to SHOW and what your AMPLIFIER is ment to SOUND like.

Crystal sound quality picks up every pinch of air left in these rockers lungs and let me tell you there is plenty of that.

The picture is pure quality showing everything so perfectly even down to the dry roasted pores in the creases of these leather faced rock gods!

The old tv footage and interviews is fantastic to watch and breaks up the concert giving you a little resting time between songs.

This film gives plenty of satisfaction!

By Kevin
Format:DVD
Legendary director Martin Scorsese has picked the Rolling Stones for his next music documentary after the success of 2005's Dylan documentary, No Direction Home. Seamlessly cutting new and old footage with a newly recorded concert, shot by no less than ten award-winning cinematographers, the film captures all of the raw energy of the Stones live on stage. Old rubber face Mick Jagger, in particular, shows no signs of slowing down as he dances up and down the stage performing classics and previously unplayed tracks from the Stones' back catalogue, which makes this more of a straightforward concert movie than a documentary. That said, interviews with the band from days gone by does provide more than enough of an insight into the band to compliment the superbly-shot concert footage. Scorsese has crafted a movie that delivers more than enough `Satisfaction' for fans and newcomers alike.

Excellent but some faults
As a Stones fan very enjoyable. As you would expect from Scorcese filming of band is excellent especially given Scorcese's difficulties (no set list until last moment etc.). Read more
