The XT-grade cassette gives essentially the same functionality as the lower-grade (SLX, Deore, Alivio, in descending order of price) versions. The sprockets themselves are still made from steel, however the largest 6 are borne on an aluminium "spider", which has two claimed advantages:

1. Replacing some of the steel with aluminium saves a few grams of weight (only really important if you're a serious racer, interested in "marginal gains")
2. The spider distributes the force of the biggest sprockets over a larger area, helping to prevent them from "cutting in" to an aluminium freehub body (as used by Hope Hubs, amongst others)

This second consideration was my reason for purchasing this item rather than a cheaper version, as I'd acquired a wheelset with an aluminium freehub body and hoped to minimise any damage. Whilst the aluminium spider achieves the required protection for the largest 6 sprockets, the next-largest one has nothing to spread the load, and it's already started eating in to the freehub after just a few hundred miles.

This is particularly galling, as there's a spacer between each sprocket, and if shimano integrated these spacers onto all the sprockets themselves (as they do for the very smallest), they could effectively double the footprint of each one, which would automatically spread the force over double the area and alleviate the problem quite a bit.

The best Shimano quality shows through here. I have a 10 year old XT derailleur 9 speed Kona bike which is still going strong and still shifts snappily but eventually the drive chain wears and it is pointless replacing the crankset and chain for an overhaul (as I am doing at the moment) without replacing this. 11-34 is a good compromise for a mountain bike if you go off road a lot but use it on roads too. Bangs for bucks this represents very good value.
