Book Description

5 Aug 2004
A little shrew had wonderful news! He wanted to tell the whole world, but it was too noisy. 'I know the secret of Peace on Earth!' he said. Nobody heard him. Everyone was much too busy doing their own thing, creating their own noises, and not listening to anything. He wanted to say that if everyone in the whole world just sat still for a moment and listened, there would be Peace on Earth. Jeanne Willis uses a wonderful hurly-burly of onomatopoeic words to accompany her familiar energetic rhythmic text, and Tony Ross rises to the challenge, producing illustrations that perfectly match both in their imaginative variety and in their glorious details.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quirky plea for peace and quiet. 28 Nov 2007
By ELH Browning TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a great book to read aloud in contrasting voices: one, the quiet voice of the little shrew who is desperately trying to impart an important message into a manic and noisy world; the other, the wide variety of these high decibel noises themselves.
Accompanied by humorous illustrations - I love the picture of the tired father pacing all night with the wailing baby - the story teaches small children the value of peace and quiet, and the importance of listening to each other. Perhaps it also reminds the busy grown-ups that even the smallest and quietest of children can have big things they're desparate to share.
Throughout the story, a little shrew has the secret of Peace on Earth and tries long and hard to impart his message unsuccessfully. The book is left open-ended as the message is clear yet the story itself unfinished: can the readers themselves be quiet enough to listen?. This however is part and parcel of the book's quirky charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun book with a message 13 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
My toddler and I really enjoy this book - it is one he will frequently choose himself off the shelf. He loves the "noisy" parts but equally enjoys taking part in the "shh" too! Beautifully illustrated and with a nice message about the need to listen we would thoroughly recommend this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL - ONE OF MY NEW FAVORITES! 12 April 2007
By D. Blankenship - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
There is no doubt that the best indorsement for a children's book is one that is accomplished by children themselves, i.e. do they read and enjoy it. This work gets that indorsement! I have yet to find a kid that did not like it. That being said, I enjoyed this one myself. It is the story of a little shrew that has something very, very important to say. He finds is little voice is completely drowned out but the noise of the world. The moral of the story is that we should "Shhhsh" and listen to the little voices all round us. We might jus learn something. The art work in this one is great, very eye catching and goes perfectly with the story line. I do recommend this one highly...there is a great lesson to be learned here, for both young and old alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids will relish reading the 'noise words' loudly, from 'thump' to 'bang': be forewarned! 6 July 2005
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Everyone's talking too loud, moving to fast, and not listening enough. Can a shrew change Life with a simple plea for quiet? He has big things to say, but a very small voice can't compete with the world's racket. Kids will relish reading the 'noise words' loudly, from 'thump' to 'bang': be forewarned!
