These days it is possible to find double-sided Explorer Maps at 1:25,000 that cover the same area as a very similarly priced 1:50,000 Landranger Map. This is the case here with the South Mainland of Shetland (South of Lerwick and including Fair Isle) in 1:25,000 compared to the corresponding Landranger Map. Here the difference is that the Landranger map also includes the Isle of Foula. However any one venturing to Foula would expect to acquire a 1:25,000 map to get the most out of a visit to this amazing naturalist's paradise.
Active Maps are nicely encapsulated in plastic for longevity in wind and rain (not unknown conditions in Shetland) and come with a plastic band that keeps the map securely folded when not in use. So, those venturing to Shetland to enjoy the great outdoors should wisely invest in an Active Map. When the trip is but a memory realized on digital images, the map can still be brought out to relive the experiences for years to come.
