Book Description

1 Jun 2007 Colin Baxter Island Guides
Shetland is closer to the Arctic Circle than to London and was ruled by Norway for over 800 years - longer than it has been part of Scotland. This guide aims to trace the history, landscape and nature of Shetland. It presents maps, colour photographs and drawings and text to describe this dynamic mix of land, sea, life and legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class 26 April 2010

Excellent book. This is a very detailed guide covering everything you could ask about the islands. She describes the roads and tracks to take to get to just about anywhere. We are going at the end of May and will keep it in the car for instant reference. Nice photos and drawings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jill Slee Blackadder's Shetland 6 Jan 2010
Beautifully produced longer hardback guide to the Shetlands with some beautiful photographs and line drawings. Enthusiastic text has convinced me to go!

P.S. Now I have been to the Shetlands, I am delighted I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding guide book of Shetland. 24 July 2010
By JudyF
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
An excellent guide book which I used throughout our recent visit to Shetland. It taught us so much about the islands, their geology, scenery, archaeology, history, story of the people and all about the wonderful wildlife. Wherever we went there was always some interesting information about the district. The guide book enabled us to enjoy our visit to Shetland so much as it helped us to plan routes, explorations and walks. The guide contains clear maps of every region and has beautiful photographs and sketches. I also like it as it does not contain advertisements for shops or accommodation. My only complaints are that the book is hard backed so it was heavy to carry in luggage and I do wish that places mentioned in the text were in bold print to make them quicker to find on the page. However I can fully recommend the guide to any visitor to Shetland.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great photos; poor text 11 Jun 2011
Colin Baxter's photos are superb. The maps are well constructed. But the text is painful! This is one of those rambling, discoursive guides that is organised around doing journeys along particular roads. But the chapters have no sub-headings so if you are looking for particular places they are difficult to find. And for my taste, the text is very waffly. This is also guite a heavy book, another reason why you might not want to take this book with you on a journey to Shetland. It may provide some background reading but I will be looking for a handier guide to take with me to Shetland.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Guide Book Souvenir 15 July 2010
By Sue B.
This is a very well-presented book with comprehensive information about each of the areas of Shetland. There are some brilliant pictures: excellent information in the Appendix on birds, plants, historic sites and landscapes: and very useful hints about how to gain local information. However, its hard cover and glossy paper make it too heavy to take on holiday, so it will remain as a very good souvenir. Its information will be used in conjunction with Robin Holmes book 'The Holiday Planning Guide to Shetland'. This gives lots of directions and time requirements and will be very useful both in planning and during our holiday.
