Product Description

Synopsis

Shetland is closer to the Arctic Circle than to London and was ruled by Norway for over 800 years - longer than it has been part of Scotland. This comprehensive guide traces the history, landscape and nature of Shetland from the earliest times to the present day. Distinctive maps, colour photographs and drawings combine the lively text to describe the dynamic mix of land, sea, life and legend that is the Shetland Isles.

Excellent book. This is a very detailed guide covering everything you could ask about the islands. She describes the roads and tracks to take to get to just about anywhere. We are going at the end of May and will keep it in the car for instant reference. Nice photos and drawings.

Beautifully produced longer hardback guide to the Shetlands with some beautiful photographs and line drawings. Enthusiastic text has convinced me to go!

P.S. Now I have been to the Shetlands, I am delighted I did!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great photos; poor text, 11 Jun 2011

Colin Baxter's photos are superb. The maps are well constructed. But the text is painful! This is one of those rambling, discoursive guides that is organised around doing journeys along particular roads. But the chapters have no sub-headings so if you are looking for particular places they are difficult to find. And for my taste, the text is very waffly. This is also guite a heavy book, another reason why you might not want to take this book with you on a journey to Shetland. It may provide some background reading but I will be looking for a handier guide to take with me to Shetland.
