Book Description

5 Jan 2012
Mike Zetterberg lives with his wife Ylva and their daughter in a house just outside Helsingborg. One evening, Ylva isn't home as expected after work. Mike passes it off as a drink with a work friend, but when she's still missing the next day, he starts to worry. As Mike battles suspicion from the police and his own despair, he is unaware that Ylva is still alive, just a stone's throw from his own home. Ylva has been drawn into a twisted plot of revenge and tragedy that leads back into her and her abductors' shared past...

Review

Crisp and simple yet devastatingly effective, this is an unrelenting, terrifying slab of a psychological thriller which ticks all the right boxes (Daily Mirror)

A supremely professional piece of work with a palpable sense of tension (Independent)

A graphic exploration of revenge and retribution . . . Koppel's novel is compulsive but uncomfortable reading (Canberra Times)

Compulsive page-turning . . . I read it in two long sessions and if you're the sort of person who doesn't need much sleep, you'll do it in one. (Morning Star)

Book Description

A Swedish psychological thriller dark enough to rival Stieg Larsson

4.0 out of 5 stars "Has mummy not come home?" 16 Jan 2012
By Nicola F (Nic) TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I've not read very much by the sudden influx of Scandi-writers (yet) and the few books that I have tried have been decent but not entirely memorable, so it's safe to say I approached this with a fair bit of trepidation. The summary on the back sounded fairly appealing though and of course the plaudit that it is a `Swedish Thriller Phenomenon' was a draw in itself. I was keen to see if this would warrant such an accolade and I have to say that I can be a bit picky in whether or not a thriller actually thrills me as well!

The premise of this book was really good and sounded intriguing; when Ylva seemingly disappears after a night out with her colleagues, her husband Mike isn't overly concerned at first. However, as more time passes he becomes worried, as well as the prime suspect in her disappearance. Unbeknownst to both him and the police however, Ylva is very much alive- and close by- infact she is being held hostage in a soundproofed basement directly opposite her own house, with a camera rigged up by her captives so she can see exactly what is going on with her own family...

I have to say that the plot of this book was compelling and it did hold my attention after a fairly slow beginning and what I initially thought would be a cast of too many characters. The writing is pacey with just the right amount of suspense to keep the reader going- you really want to know what is going to happen to Ylva as well as why she has found herself in the predicament she is. As the story slowly unravels with little twists and turns you can imagine the torture she is going through at being trapped but having to witness the outside world through a TV monitor and particularly the actions of her husband and young daughter surviving without her.

Characters are well drawn and believable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Start to a new year. 23 Dec 2011
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
When you've never read an author before the reader usually suffers from one of two reactions (or rather I do to be honest.) First of all that thrill of excitement at not knowing what to expect and secondly that cold chill down your back that says, but what if it doesn't live up to my expectations and for me wastes my time and money? So which is this title going to do? And with such an early launch for the new year, is it a book that they hope will do well or just tacked in to get the season off to a start when people may spend without realising what they're getting.

All of which are pertinent questions and of course I'll do my best to answer them. First of all, this book by Hans is a story of firstly the human spirit and the strength that it can demonstrate when evil things are thrust their way, not by way of a creature but by way of the evil that others do unto us and for me, it's a story of crime.

Its cunningly crafted, it's addictive and the way that the pages meld you really can't find a convenient place to put the book down for the night as you promise yourself just a few more pages. Add to this solid characterisation and people that you can believe in, great prose and of course a storyline that really will keep you gripped as you follow the actions and reactions as they unfurl. Finally add to this an author who likes to add some sleight of hand (you'll find this out towards the books culmination) and a wicked twist or two that will leave you wanting more. Cracking all round and a great way to start the new year.

4.0 out of 5 stars She's Never Coming Back Review 13 Jan 2012

Or read here: She's Never Coming Back by Hans Koppel

An adulterous wife fails to come home from work so the husband is suspicious but not unduly concerned. As the hours turn into days, however, he becomes frantic with worry and by the time the police become involved, his hysterical behaviour seals his status as their number one suspect. What no one knows is that the wife is being held hostage in the cellar of the house opposite her own.

She's Never Coming Back is the terrifying tale of Ylva Zetterberg and how she is dragged into a twisted plot of revenge and tragedy. She is held hostage, raped, humiliated and debased. In her cell is a monitor on which she is also forced to watch her husband and young daughter come to terms with the grief of their loss and, eventually, attempt to restore some normality to their lives.

In fact, part of the terror of Ylva's existence - apart from the unimaginable brutality of her everyday reality - is her eventual acceptance of her unbearable situation and her husband Mike's slow acceptance of her disappearance. In many ways, the true horror of the story is the way we so easily move on from loss and tragedy.

As Mike tells himself: "No matter what happened, things always blew over. Became part of life's great charade. Hundreds killed in a plane crash? Months later it would be forgotten and only the anniversary would be marked. Thousands killed in a natural catastrophe? A week of grim news reports and then it turned into something you looked up on Wikipedia. The tsunami, what year was that? That's right, of course."

A woman trapped in a cellar where she is tortured and abused, where she can see her family but they cannot see her.
