5.0 out of 5 stars A real love affair 11 Feb 2005
This book is written with a great deal of love and understanding of sherry and the people who made the trade in it so successful. It is a fascinating insight into how the popularity of sherry developed, and how the winemakers have coped with change and development. The fifth edition is as fresh as the first, written after the author's stay in Jerez in 1956.

By Sean F. Diggins - Published on
In this latest version, Julien Jeffs has written a full and rich account of an ancient and renowned wine for wine professionals and admirers alike. Jeffs crisply and wryly tells the story of sherry and its origins, production and technical analyisis from grapes to finished product, detailed information on contemporary shipping bodegas and the colorfully vast history of the events and people involved in making this wine into one of the most delightful, famous and far reaching beverages the world has ever known.

If you REALLY want to know about sherry then purchase this. Sherry is difficult to learn about due to the variety of styles and this text really makes it easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Value 30 July 2011

Things have changed a lot since this book was published and are worth looking into, but as a historical primer on Jerez, Sanlucar and Puerto del Santa Maria, the older editions of this now seminal work are more than satisfactory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Wine Book 15 Sep 2013
By Fries - Published on
This is probably the best Wine book I have ever read. Fun to read. In depth on pretty much everything whether it is history, funny anecdotes or the specific methods formerly and currently used for tilling the soil in the off seasons.
4.0 out of 5 stars Still a classic 2 Oct 2013

The Sherry industry changes quickly, so that the number of years since the last edition of this book was published is perhaps a significant bias. Notwithstanding this, the book remains a classic: very well-written, informative, detailed and witty. It goes on being mandatory on the shelves of any Sherry lover. It is available only in the Kindle edition, though.
