Product Description

1903 saw The Adventure of The Empty House and the return of Sherlock Holmes to 221b Baker Street where he explains the deception of his death at the Reichenbach Falls to his faithful friend Dr John Watson. 2012 sees The Crime of The Empty House where the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Undershaw, lies in disrepair and the threat of being destroyed forever. Commissioned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself, Undershaw was witness to the creation of many of his most famous works, including The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Return of Sherlock Holmes. It is a building deserving preservation for the British nation, and indeed the world, for all time. Sadly, the building is currently under threat from the property developers who wish to divide the house into 3 separate units and build a further 5 alongside. Planning permission for development has already been approved by Waverley Borough Council. The Undershaw Preservation Trust (UPT), with Mark Gatiss [BBC Sherlock] as Patron, is dedicated to the preservation and protection of this important literary building and are campaigning to get this decision overturned, so the house can be restored to its original glory and enjoyed as the single dwelling Sir Arthur Conan Doyle intended it to be. This book is a collection of short Sherlock Holmes stories and poems written by fans from around the world in support of the Save Undershaw campaign - even the cover has been designed by fans. Royalties from the book go towards the UPT to preserve this wonderful house for future generations of Doyleans, Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts and literary fans of all kinds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite enjoyable! 15 Jun 2012

("Pardon my French"! I am a Frenchwoman and so am likely to make mistakes in writing this review)
I bought this item with the FALSE idea that some of the short stories had actuall been written by Mark Gatiss or Stephen Fry. It is strongly implied (in ambiguous terms though) on the cover. Yet they made a contribution... to the "Introduction". I can't blame them for not getting more involved - they pretty much have other things to do - but I blame the publisher, who did a fairly poor job. Indeed, in addition to this, some of the texts had mispellings, erros in typography etc. Which is too bad, because otherwise it is a fairly enjoyable book!
Those were the drawbacks. If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes and want to (or not) to support the preservation of Conan Doyle's house, go ahead! Some stories are quite brillant (I think of "Distraction" or "Charlie Milverton"); not all are set in Victorian times, a few (budding?) writers used the BBC series as a basis for their story... A couple of them are actually set in the future! And let's not forget about the moving poems dedicated to Holmes or Doyle. Of course, as they are very different from one another, you might not appreciate every single one of them; but still, you have a good time and discovers new aspects to Holmes' or Watson's peronality or life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it 25 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A good collection of fan created stories that span both the original time-line and that of the modern incarnation. Well worth both the read and the money, as it goes to help preserves Conan Doyles home, where many of the Holmes tales were writen.
