Sherlock: The Adventures contains twelve short stories first published in The Strand magazine between 1891 and 1892 and then published as a collection in October 1892. It includes some of Conan Doyle's best tales of murder and mystery, such as 'The Adventures of the Speckled Band', in which the strange last words of a dying woman 'It was the band, the speckled band!' and a inexplicable whistling in the night are the only clues Sherlock Holmes has to prevent another murder; and 'The Five Orange Pips', in which an untimely death and the discovery of the letter containing five orange pips lead to a cross-Atlantic conspiracy.

A very good edition of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" with a lovely introduction by "Sherlock" co-creator Mark Gatiss.
These are the first set of short stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle, and to my mind the best, the first three in the collection are "A Scandal in Bohemia", "The Adventure of the Red-Headed League", and "A Case of Identity" and are the best examples of short stories in detective fiction. The rest of the stories are also brilliant: "The Boscombe Valley Mystery", "The Five Orange Pips", "The Man with the Twisted Lip", "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle", "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb", "The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor", "The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet" and "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches".
There appears to be a typo in the heading of the pages for "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", where it is called "The Adventure of the Speckled HEN" -- could be a collectors item :-)

Holmes is at his finest in this collection. It includes some of his best mysteries and is an excellent introduction to the ageless detective. This edition is far better to read than some of the cheaper compilations, which are a little crammed in with small text, and it's good to have an introduction by Mark Gatiss, fresh from his successful TV adaptation.
