Enjoyable read!,
By
This review is from: Sherlock Holmes - The Shadow of the Rat & The Tangled Skein (Mystery & Supernatural) (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) (Paperback)
First let me mention the benefits that this book offer: -
1. It compiles an overpriced (as well as out-of-reach) Calabash Press book with an out-of-print Wordsworth book, and makes them available at a truly affordable price. 2. These two pastiches are (arguably) the author's best efforts in Sherlockiana so far, and they prove to be quite enjoyable reads despite their consciously deviant (from Sir Arthur's position) attitude towards supernatural. Now, let's (as gingerly as possible) approach the limitations: - 1. "The Shadow of the Rat" is considerably inferior compared to "The Giant Rat of Sumatra" by Richard L. Boyer. 2. "The Tangled Skein" is a strange effort where two of the all-time great novels ("The Hound of The Baskervilles" and "Dracula") are mixed into a goulash which (obviously) tastes lesser. 3. The Wordsworth format is devoid of any introductory materials of any kind, and thus does disservice to the books, since some addenda on the part of the author regarding Sir Arthur's attitude towards mesmerism and supernatural, and how it had an effect on his works (notably, in "The Parasite") would have made this book less "pulpy" and more "solid"(durable?). Nevertheless, it is a very good book and I recommend it to all admirers of Sherlock Holmes.

Buyer Beware,
By David St. John - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sherlock Holmes - The Shadow of the Rat & The Tangled Skein (Mystery & Supernatural) (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) (Paperback)
My lowish rating is because the first story in this book has already been published as the Giant Rat of Samantra. I felt cheated to buy a book I already have under another title. I'm a bit disappointed in Amazon for not being clear on this. I've come to trust Amazon and not that trust has been a wee bit tainted.
The story itself (first of two in the book) is solid. I enjoyed reading it the first time. It kept my attention and made me squirm where it was meant to and excited where it was meant to. Would I buy this book? Yes, unless you already have the Giant Rat of Samantra. Sadly David St. John 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:

this is one of the much better pastiches done recently. I enjoyed the stories and was quite a bargain to get 2 in 1 book. Both were enjoyable although I found Shadow of the Rat to be the better of the 2

Two Fantastic Sherlock Holmes Novels,
By Sand under foot - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Sherlock Holmes - The Shadow of the Rat & The Tangled Skein (Mystery & Supernatural) (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) (Paperback)
I was very excited to receive this book, which consists of two Sherlock Holmes novels written by David Stuart Davies.
The Shadow of the Rat I found this story was the weaker of the two Holmes novels. Of course for die-hard Holmes fans, they would recognize this is of course teh author's own conception of The Giant Rat of Sumatra. In the novel, Holmes becomes the unwilling aide in the master plot. So this book gives Watson a large amount of things to do, trying to nurse Holmes back to health and save the day. 3/5 stars The Tangled Skein It was this novel which made me give this book five stars. This novel compensates for the other weaker novel. This book is made almost as a sequel to The Hound of the Baskervilles. Holmes and Watson are involved in a thrilling adventure, which begins with Holmes almost being killed by a vengeful Stapleton (the villain from The Hound). Soon Holmes and Watson are visited by Professor Van Helsing, and before long Holmes and Watson find themselves fighting their way past the myrmidons of the un-dead. And this leads them back to the moorlands which was of course the setting for The Hound. And it is here that Holmes and Watson face off against the king of vampires...Count Dracula. I thought this novel was a fantastic tale, well written and very exciting. I thought that the author's conception of Dracula was perhaps even more terrifying then in the original novel. I found myself very scared in parts. A fantastic book for both fans of Sherlock Holmes and Dracula. 5/5 stars In all, I recommend this book just for The Tangled Skein. But when you have, do not neglect The Shadow of the Rat, which is a highly atmospheric Holmes novel too. Furthermore, be sure to read the wonderful foreward to the book written by actor Peter Cushing. |
