This tape is a really good buy for Holmes fans. Two of the better stories well told by an excellent cast. Wilmer is top-notch as Sherlock, bettered only by Jeremy Brett, and, while not being in the Burke/Hardwicke class, Stock is an enjoyable Watson. Menwhile, old 'Jason King' himself, Peter Wyngarde, is suitably hissable in the second of these two dated, but lovingly recreated tales. More please!!!!!

Two highly satisfying adaptations. The production values are much lower than the Granada series with Jeremy Brett, but these films are much more direct - there's much less packaging. Wilmer's performance has Bretts edge, but is urbane at times, too. Both interpretations are of course permissible. I wish he didn't smoke his pipe on location, though - that seems wrong, as does the series' persistance with the cape and deerstalker image. Nigel Stock's Watson is highly credible, too - second only, I would say, to Edward Hardwicke.

I have a sizeable collection of video and audio recordings of Sherlock Holmes related material and I would place this video as one of the gems of my collection. Now the BBC has released the surviving episodes of the Peter Cushing series we can only hope they will mow do a full release of the surviving Wilmer Series. Douglas Wilmer is the only actor to equal the late great Jeremy Brett for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. On this (now deleted)excellent VHS release you have two of the most enjoyable Holmes adventures "The Speckled band" and "The Illustrious client" (look out for the pre Jason King Peter Wingarde)I recommend you buy this before all remaining copies fall into the hands of collectors.

Regards.
