After the initial success, the piece was revived to great acclaim starring Robert Powell (Jesus Of Nazareth, The Detectives, Mark Williams in Holby City), and Roy Barraclough MBE, (Les Dawson's comedy partner and star of Coronation Street and numerous TV Dramas). It is this revival that TER recorded to continue their series of recordings written by Leslie Bricusse, which have included Stop The World I Want To Get Off, Pickwick and Scrooge.
This recording makes an essential addition to the collection of any Sherlock Holmes fan, and is a classic example of the regionally nurtured and highly successful productions that abound in British Musical Theatre.

Humourous and Clever Score with Only One Terrible Number,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sherlock Holmes (Audio CD)
It was West End and Broadway great Ron Moody (Fagin from "Oliver!") who created the part of Holmes originally, however this recording covers the revival starring Robert Powell as the "world's only consulting detective." He acquits himself extremely well, especially in "Without Him, There Can Be No Me" where he laments the fact he did not die with Moriarty at Reichenbach. Ray Barraclough as Watson provides us with an amicable blend of Nigel Bruce's classic interpretation as well as Doyle's original depiction as an extremely intelligent man who might not have always been able to follow Holmes when he was on the job. However, it is really Louise English who steals the recording, singing her duets in "A Million Years Ago" and in the surprisingly touching "The Best of You - The Best of Me" with extreme aplomb, wit, and tenderness as the vengeful and witty Bella Moriarty. Overall Leslie Bricusse has written a wonderful score with witty lyrics suitable for the characters, and has created a zesty, clever libretto as well. While the score boasts one extremely terrible number "Down the Apples and Pears" it is always eminently listenable (including "...Apples and Pears), is orchestrated cleverly, and attempts to evoke the spirit of Victorian London (and mostly succeeding.) Bricusse also uses varying song stylizations including a waltz for the Baker Street Irregulars and several clever ballads for Holmes and Watson. There is also a Gilbert & Sullivan inspired patter song between Watson and Mrs. Hudson where they discuss Holmes' idiosyncratic nature that is guaranteed to bring a smile to the faces of the myriad followers of Sherlock Holmes worldwide. While the score is not as good as Bricusse's collaborations with Anthony Newley ("Stop The World -I Want To Get Off" and "The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd"), it is still extremely well written and conceived. This soundtrack would make a welcome addition to anyone's collection on the basis of the fine voices, the clever orchestration and score, but most importantly as a fine musical tribute to an immortal literary character. Holmes fans should not be too alarmed by the ending of the musical, as it seems only to be the most natural extension of the story, which is intended as a loving parody, and as one it works quite well.
