Product Description

When a night at the opera turns to murder, master sleuth Sherlock Holmes and the illustrious Dr. Watson once again find themselves embroided in a spell binding mystery in Sherlock Holmes and The Leading Lady In 1910 Vienna, a horrible explosive device has just been invented...and stolen. The possessor of such a weapon could bring the world to it s knees. The great Sherlock Holmes is summoned by the British Prime Minister to go to Austria to solve the case. But Holmes never suspects the mystery will reunite him with the one love of his life, Irene Adler. At last Holmes meets his match and succumbs to romance! The beautiful opera singer joins Holmes and Dr. Watson on a harrowing race across Europe to stop an intricate spy network from carrying out their deadly plans. From the foggy London streets to breathtaking Vienna and the alluring opera world. From a grand costumed ball and romantic sleigh rides in the Australian countryside to the dens of decadence in the exotic land of Algiers. Each step of the trail leads the trio closer to the solution...and to a brutal murder. Soon no one can be trusted not even the world renowned Sigmund Freud and George Bernard Shaw. Even the one lady of Holmes s life becomes a suspect. Ultimately Holmes and Watson enter a desperate race against the clock when they discover the deadly weapon will be put to it s first test on the opening night of the opera, a test that will alter the course of history forever! I bought this film for Christopher Lee, an actor for whom I have a great deal of respect. I DID NOT, however, read the rest of the cast list carefully enough. If I had realized that Morgan Fairchild was playing "THE Woman" I would have left it on the cyber shelf. She was a lousy actress when she played in American Soaps in the Sixties and Seventies and nothing has changed in that department.

As for the plot, it was far fetched and, at times, down right stupid. Eliot Ness, indeed!!!! If I am correct about my history, the real Ness would have still been in short pants at the time, let alone working for the Treasury Department!!!! Give us a break!!!!! As a previous reviewer indicated, it is a real Turkey and don't waste your money. It is a film that will sit on our shelf and gather dust and, in time, will be delegated to a charity bin.

Patrick Macnee was a creditable Watson, as so he should -- the great actor he is. But there were greater -- the late James Mason, Edward Hardwicke (who died this summer), David Burke and, we mustn't forget the late, great Nigel Bruce, who gave the role a character none of us will ever forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holmes Near His Best! 14 April 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Strangely everyone else has been negative about this tele-movie! I found it very good. Not quite as superb as Incident at Victoria Falls; but very very good nonetheless. Do not be put of by all the negative reviews. If you are a Holmes fan and a Christopher Lee fan as well, you will love this film! Yes it as a little different from some other Holmes filmes, because it shows Holmes in later years; but it is still an excellent film, especially at the great price being offered on Amazon!
