Book Description

4 April 2005

Charismatic David Kennard lives a life most people can only dream about. Farming on a spectacularly beautiful part of the Devon coast he has an almost telepathic bond with nature and with his working sheepdogs. His is a life filled with daily challenges, from the battles with wild Atlantic weather to the dramas of clifftop rescue, but it is also a life full of the richness of rebirth, and the Herriotesque delight in a way of life that has remained almost untouched by the modern world.

Part diary, part homage to the countryside and the canine family that is so much a part of his life, David Kennard's extraordinary book is designed to touch the hearts and minds of city and country dwellers alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I expected and more! 22 July 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I first encountered David Kennard while on holiday in Devon 2 years ago when I when to see his sheepdog demonstration, which was thoroughly entertaining. While there I bought his video and was elated when I saw that he had also written a book! I really do not know how he finds the time to do all these things, as when you read the book, you will see that sheep farming is more than a full time job. The book is well written and easy to read and gives a rare insight into sheep farming in this day and age. It has to be said the dogs themselves are delightful characters too. Whatever your choice of reading matter this book is a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars Its a wonderful life.. sometimes 22 April 2004
Format:Hardcover
David Kennard sent this book to my daughter. My whole family read everyword in the book. It gave an insight to a life which will sadly no longerexist when his and our children grow up. David told his story with witand wisdom. His dogs are part of a large patient farming farmily, struggling against red tape and so called "progress". A Well written, intuitive insight into a world most people long for. Both funny and sad, every emotion will be visited when reading this book. Amust read thisyear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 16 Mar 2007
By BFL
Format:Paperback
An absolute joy to read. Being a sheep farmer myself, I howled with laughter at Mr Kennards wry take on a sheeps' attitude to life. His attachment and partnership with his dogs is inspiring and having just started in the sheepdog world is just what I am aiming for. He tells it like it is, a hard slog in terrible weather sometimes, but the sense of achievement in a job well done and those quiet moments of reflection and contentment are worth every sleepless night over lambing.

I recieved this book as a birthday present as I love anything to do with Border Collies and farming and wasn't dissapointed.
It's a well written book and a great insight into Davids life.
It also explains the ups and downs of farming now and how with support from his family and friends & great dogs he continues to farm,it gives you a lot of detail about each dogs personalities.
Once I started reading it was very difficult to put it down.
I've now bought his second book which is as good as this one.
So well done on a FANTASTIC book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Interesting but bland. The odd phrase is pleasantly put. It's certainly not an emotionally charged book about a love for border collies! He is a farmer, after all, not a writer. Read more
