Mr. Keller is very good at bringing to life the shepherd's view as expressed in the 23rd Psalm. He is personally aquainted with the Eastern way of sheep ranching, which of couse is the method employed and understood by David, the psalm's writer. More than just being insightful into the shepherd's mind-set and references, he takes us beyond the physical realm to the spiritual applications that were intended by the the Lord, who inspired David to write it. Herein lies the real worth of this book, because we are brought to see the Great Shepherd, Jesus Christ, and how He is caring for the sheep of His pasture. It brings great comfort to know the love and care that My Shepherd exhibits for me. I recommend it to read by all those who have called upon the Lord and have let Him be their Shepherd. As they read this book they'll understand in a far deeper way the psalms' opening line, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." I also recommend it to those who ! ! are seeking such an encounter with the Lord God. He is patiently waiting your surrender. God bless you and brother Keller.

"The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want." ....A lot of people throughout the English-speaking world will be familiar with the 23rd Psalm, either from the Bible or from one of the many old hymns and modern choruses based upon it. The old King James Bible version of this psalm, set to the tune of Crimond, is still frequently used at memorial services. So, although this book is primarily aimed at the committed Christian, it potentially has a very wide readership indeed.

Philip Keller was a shepherd in both Africa and North America, as well as being a pastor and author of many books. He is able to relate his vast experience of caring for sheep to each line of the psalm - which he does very well in successive chapters. It really brings it to life, and things emerge which the average townie or city-dweller would be quite unaware of - but which must have informed the thinking of King David, the psalmist.

This is a very rich psalm, and Keller mines his subject in a masterly way, but using a very homely and readable style. I first read the book about thirty years ago. Upon re-reading it I was surprised to find how much more I got out of it the second time round!

The book is also a good antidote both to reading this psalm with the lack of attention so easily created by long familiarity, and also to an merely sentimental response to it. Being a good shepherd is clearly very exacting work. A "sheep" who wishes to stay close to Him will want to improve his/her appreciation of that, and all that the shepherd does for him - the better to collaborate with Him. Theis book certainly helps, and rewards a thoughtful read with many insights.

It comes as no surprise that over 2 million of these have been sold, it is a gem of a book that should be beside every Christians bed. I cannot recommend this little book enough, it speaks right into the heart in a straightforward, unsentimental and compassionate way. Here is an paragraph from the last chapter:

"It is the sheep owner's presence that guarantees there will be no lack of any sort; that there will be abundant green pastures; that there will be still, clean waters; that there will be new paths into fresh fields; that there will be safe summers on the high tablelands; that there will be freedom from fear; antidotes from disease; that there will be quietness and contentment. In our Christian lives and experience, precisely the same idea and principle applies.'

I encourage you to get this book. It will be a blessing in your walk with Christ.

As the title shows this is a look at the well-know Psalm 23 from a shepherd's point of view. It gives such an insight into this psalm and how the shepherd looks after the sheep throughout the seasons. It looks at how vulnerable and nervous sheep can be unless in the security of a good shepherd.

This book I read several times, then bought two more copies to give away to friends who have been blessed by reading it. Because the author was a shepherd himself gives him an authority and understanding of shepherding. Buy it and be blessed

I first read this book over 30 years ago, and I have given away many copies. Phillip Keller's experience as a shepherd brings this Psalm alive in a way I have never read anywhere else. Once we understand what the phrases mean in context, it revolutionises the way we read it. I highly recommend it to everyone - it is a must-read for those who want to grasp what David meant, so that they can apply it to their own lives. What a wonderful Shepherd we have!
