I'm a big fan of Moyes' work and was anticipating another brilliant read with this novel. Whilst I wasn't exactly disappointed by it, I will concede that this isn't as strong as some of her other books.
The premise of the novel works really well- focusing on the relationships between mothers and daughters over three generations of one family, the setting moving between Hong Kong, London and rural Ireland. There's the usual mystery and intrigue and Jojo Moye's ability to craft family secrets, as well as a little bit of romance.
However, I think the characters in this story put me off somewhat. I genuinely found it hard to care about any of them, which is a bit of a shame- and the major flaw with the novel. In Moyes' other books, you find yourself emphasising with her characters and wanting things to go their way, but with this one I felt none of that, which is perhaps why I didn't enjoy it as much.
Nevertheless, a good read- just if you're a first time reader of Moyes' I'd recommend you perhaps start with 'Night Music' or 'Silver Bay' instead.
