May 23, 1976, saw the penultimate concert of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue at the Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado. The concert is famous since it was broadcast on NBC television and shown in the UK around the same time? (the old memory could do with some helpful assistance here from Amazon readers). The concert was the base root for the Dylan live album “Hard Rain” and latter figured in the The Bootleg Series Vol. 5: Bob Dylan Live 1975, The Rolling Thunder Revue.

The “Hard Rain” album and the concert never excited much critical praise at the time and yet there is something about this ramshackle, imperfect and often chaotic recording which has endured to this day. This recording “Shelter from a Hard Rain” is essentially an FM radio print and the sound quality is ragged with the drums often sounding like someone kicking a post box! In candour this reviewer would not have it any other way as this is Dylan and his fellow musicians in the raw deconstructing many of his best “Blood on the Tracks” songs in an often raucous and angry fashion. It also sees the broad introduction of the violin work of Scarlet Rivera which dominated Dylan’s “Desire” album for good or ill (dependent on your opinion). The whole thing kicks off with a storming countrified version of “Hard Rains Gonna Fall” where at one point the backing singers fail to keep up until Joan Baez voice, chivvies them along. Baez and Dylan do a great duet on “Blowin in the Wind” but it is their simple superb version of Woody Guthrie’s “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)” which is the killer. The voices of these two musical giants are perfectly in unison. See the internet version of this with Baez in her bright red Turban and Dylan with what looks like a Monty Python white hanky on his head and try not to love it.

Voice is losing it - been a fan for 40+ years and will always love his music but newer albums definitely for the hardened fan rather than appealing to new ones.

Some of the best of the 'Rolling Thunder' tour. Atmospheric and raw.
