Reviews

A long-running success for ITV lasting for ten series over thirteen years Shelley features a masterful performance by Hywel Bennett as the bone-idle graduate-philosopher cast adrift on a sea of unemployment. This set contains the complete sixth series, also featuring Belinda Sinclair as girlfriend Fran, and Garfield Morgan (The Sweeney) as hall porter Desmond; Fulton McKay, Max Wall and Robert Raglan guest-star.

It's been months since Fran gave Shelley the elbow until he can prove himself, economically speaking. In this sixth series, his ceaseless battle with bureaucracy sees him staging a sit-in at the electricity board and spending a night in a police cell, while enduring loneliness, burglary, and a visit from his mother who's on a mission to reconcile him with Fran. But most distressing of all... he has to live without his toaster!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Mr. D. K. Smith TOP 500 REVIEWER on 17 Oct. 2012
Format: DVD
Transmitted in 1983/1984, Series 6 sees James Shelley still estranged from his wife Fran (Belinda Sinclair) and crossing swords with Desmond the Doorman (Garfield Morgan).

By this time, series creator Peter Tilbury had moved onto other projects, so two scripts apiece were written by Guy Jenkin, Andy Hamilton and Barry Pilton. Jenkin and Hamilton went onto write, amongst others, Drop The Dead Donkey, so their comedy credentials are pretty secure.

For anybody who has been collecting these releases, then series 6 continues along pretty much the same lines as before, with Shelley spending his time railing against modern life and bureaucracy.

It's a great vehicle for Hywel Bennett, who has strong support from guest stars Max Wall and Fulton McKay. McKay guests in "Of Cabbages and Kings" which is quintessential Shelley, as our hero and his friend Malcolm spend the episode philosophising about life with a tramp (McKay).

Shelley is that rarity, an ITV sitcom from the 1970's or 1980's that was both popular and good. Nearly thirty years later it still has rewatch value, and it's good to see that Network are still releasing the series, albeit on a pretty irregular basis.

Top ITV comedy from the masters at Thames TV,can't wait for series 7, hopefully it won't be too long.
Network do a great job of releasing television classics.

I remember Shelley well from my youth, it is very funny, taking a stab at society and authorities, whilst seeing how life was and learning about what one has to do to make changes and conform if success is to be found. It looks at work and relationships, marriage and divorce, and there is a lot to be learned whilst enjoying it too. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys works from the past, since they don't seem to be able to write work like this any more. Good, clean, honest work that does not contain the violence or lewdness of today.
