This is the second Mallory book that I have read and I am in two minds about whether or not I would recommend it to anyone.
The characters are beautifully wrought and give the book a depth that is often lacking in novels of this genre. Even Kathy Mallory, who readers seem to love or hate, was fleshed out and made a more complete character. Carol O'Connell writes with an art that allows the reader to savour her story and the characters who populate it.
Having said that I found that the plot was very drawn out. Not unnecessarily complex, but ebbing and rising like a tide. It left me with the feeling that I was still waiting for something more.
If this is going to be your first Mallory book I suggest starting with one of the others. If you have read any Mallory books before then give this one a chance. It's not as pacy, but it will reward you.
