This is a beautifully presented book with the highest quality production values that proudly promote the enormous research from the authors. It is clearly designed to be kept on the bookshelf, to be consulted and revered.
It is a long time since Keith Farnsworth produced the 'Complete Record 1867-1987' with Breedon Books and this lovingly produced work moves the Wednesday story on almost another quarter of a century.
By necessity, more than half the book is purely factual, repesenting the statistical record of everything 'Wednesday'. The new additions are greater detail on the non-First Team records such as the Reserves and other Minor teams and junior competitions. For programme collectors, this will prove useful together with more details on obscure Friendly games.
Given the Club's recent brush with extinction, it is also interesting to see a few little sections on the financial side of the club such as Season Ticket Prices, Sponsors and Finance. One tiny criticism of this reference section is the over-use of the blue and purple page colouring.
Much more fun is to be had in the first third of the book where the authors actually get to write some stuff! The earlier Breedon format is retained and updated with sections on General History, Former Managers and Past Grounds. The 'Games to Remember' section shows 6 additions since 1987. Five of these will be easy to guess but the sixth one was a surprise.
They have also updated the section which is now boldly called 'Wednesday's 125 Greatest Players'. As a reviewer, I will now struggle to stay calm and balanced and, through gritted teeth, say that this is a section of subjective opinions which will provoke many a heated debate among Wednesdayites.
