Product Description

This is the ultimate guide to Sheffield Wednesday - all the statistics from every season, matches to remember, star players and much, more. It is fully-illustrated with many previously-unseen photographs. It is the perfect present for any Owls supporter. "Sheffield Wednesday: The Complete Record" is the official record of the Owls since their formation in 1867. Written by John Brodie and Jason Dickinson, this book is the definitive guide to Sheffield and will be on the wish list of every Owl fan. The story of Sheffield Wednesday, from its beginnings in the 19th century to the present day, is covered in fascinating detail. It is followed by profiles of the club's great players, the managers, matches to remember and a history of the grounds. In addition, the full season-by-season record of every first-team League and Cup game they have contested is documented. Summaries, records and statistics complete the picture. The result is a volume that is an essential addition to the bookshelves of any Owls fan. Put simply, this is a book that provides everything any Sheffield Wednesday fan, and indeed any football fan, would want to know about Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

About the Author

JOHN BRODIE Born in Retford, Nottinghamshire in 1951, John has been a lifetime fan of Sheffield Wednesday since a neighbour's son took him to a game as a young boy. More than 50 years on, the club is still his passion. Happily married for 31 years and with two grown up children, John still works as an engineer surveyor for a major insurance company. John is a keen and very knowledgeable club statistician. He is renowned for being able to turn any topic of conversation to football, and more precisely Sheffield Wednesday, within a few sentences. Five years ago, together with co-author and long standing friend, Jason Dickinson, they put 14 years of research into The Wednesday Boys, a comprehensive who's who of the club, but felt that there was still more to ground to cover, hence this new offering. JASON DICKINSON Born in Sheffield in 1969, Jason was first taken to Hillsborough at the age of 10 by his father, Ken - the 1979 Boxing Day massacre game against Sheffield United being an early memory. This started an affinity with the club that resulted in frequent visits to Hillsborough until the purchase of his first season ticket for the Kop back in the summer of 1986. He has only missed only a handful of competitive games, home and away, in the last 15 years. His interest with the history of Sheffield Wednesday was sparked through a rapidly expanding collection of matchday programmes. As his knowledge increased Jason's was co-opted onto the club's programme team in 1994, and he continues to write for the club's official journal to this day. Jason has previously written 5 books on Sheffield Wednesday. Married to wife, Michelle, Jason works as an accountant in the Sheffield suburb of Chapeltown and lives in nearby High Green, with Cassie the Staffie and one-legged rescue hedgehog, Sonic.

A weighty tome 29 Dec 2011
By Officer Dibble VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This is a beautifully presented book with the highest quality production values that proudly promote the enormous research from the authors. It is clearly designed to be kept on the bookshelf, to be consulted and revered.

It is a long time since Keith Farnsworth produced the 'Complete Record 1867-1987' with Breedon Books and this lovingly produced work moves the Wednesday story on almost another quarter of a century.

By necessity, more than half the book is purely factual, repesenting the statistical record of everything 'Wednesday'. The new additions are greater detail on the non-First Team records such as the Reserves and other Minor teams and junior competitions. For programme collectors, this will prove useful together with more details on obscure Friendly games.

Given the Club's recent brush with extinction, it is also interesting to see a few little sections on the financial side of the club such as Season Ticket Prices, Sponsors and Finance. One tiny criticism of this reference section is the over-use of the blue and purple page colouring.

Much more fun is to be had in the first third of the book where the authors actually get to write some stuff! The earlier Breedon format is retained and updated with sections on General History, Former Managers and Past Grounds. The 'Games to Remember' section shows 6 additions since 1987. Five of these will be easy to guess but the sixth one was a surprise.

They have also updated the section which is now boldly called 'Wednesday's 125 Greatest Players'. As a reviewer, I will now struggle to stay calm and balanced and, through gritted teeth, say that this is a section of subjective opinions which will provoke many a heated debate among Wednesdayites.

Not only was our package left on the grass verge in front of our house (thankfully placed on our doorstep by a friendly neighbour) this book is in poor shape - will need to give it as a christmas present without the paper cover as I dont have the time to replace it. Sort it out Amazon!
