Review

...any practice that does any work with sheep, whether hill or lowland, commercial or lawn mowing, should buy a copy of this book..... the illustrations alone make this textbook worthwhile, and the layout is excellent. (The Veterinary Times )

Product Description

The author has many years experience in both farm animal practice and commercial sheep farming. In this book he focuses on state-of-the-art clinical medicine and relates it to issues of sheep welfare and husbandry. He takes into account the relationship between the veterinarian and the farmer by dealing with veterinary clinical examination and inspection of husbandry practice, along with subsequent practical and cost effective advice that the veterinarian will have to discuss with the farmer. The book describes and illustrates the important diseases of sheep encountered in general practice, their diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and control. It is divided into chapters based upon each body system and, where appropriate, chapters open with a suggested approach to clinical examination of that body system. Many of the chapters conclude with self-assessment exercises featuring typical clinical cases. The book is of value to veterinarians in practice and training, animal scientists and agricultural advisors, and scientists interested in animal welfare

If you have ever spoken/listened to Phil Scott, I'm afraid that is exactly his view of farmers. And yes, the first time I sat in a lecture theatre with him (being a farmers daughter) I had a strong urge to pick a fight! However I have come to realise he is an excellent clinician with an extensive knowledge of all things sheep (if a little opinionated), and that we need people like him to stir up debate, start thinking about what goes on on your farm, how and if you need to improve it. And if he has made you think then he has achieved something, because in some cases he is right - it is the farmers fault sometimes, but how do you improve anything if you are never made to question how you do things?

Yes this book has strong opinions in places but it is an invaluable reference guide to diseases of sheep, their pathogenesis, treatment and control.

A really great book with many details in every department. Offers a great deal of information on about every system. The only flaw of this book is that has very few references on diseases that are outside the UK but still in EU. Anyway recommend thiw to any vet that works in th UK.

would recommend 28 Dec 2009

I am a vet student with an interest in mixed/large animal practice, although I have to admit that I would know a lot more about cows and horses than sheep (not that many sheep where I'm from). I found this book really great for its common sense, readability and thorough approach, and also the fact that it had so many pictures, which, as a student, I found really helpful - as you will never be lucky enough to personally see every disease presentation while in college! What I liked most about the book is the author's realistic approach to what happens on farms - as we know, its fine to say 'the ideal farm will have a, b, and c', but in real life things don't always happen that way! Also, I was surprised by how interesting I found the book, considering that my own main interests lie elsewhere.
