Shedworking - an inspirational guide,
By
This review is from: Shedworking: The Alternative Workplace Revolution (Paperback)
A very nicely produced book with a great deal of valuable information. It clearly transmits the author's enthusiasm for the shedworking ethos and the non-commuting lifestyle.
The book is very well written, with a light, approachable style. The author describes a brief history of shedworking, famous shed workers, inspirational examples, pros and cons of building your own. He even looks at shed-like working; canal boats, caravans and bizarre garden structures clearly more for show than everyday use. This is a very practical book with a range of case studies. These cover a wide range of different businesses - from writers and craft makers to music producers and design practices- and these are both helpful and encouraging. This isn't a book about to build a shed or garden office but by the time you've finished it, you'll almost certainly want one. One small comment: It would be helpful to have the contact addresses and websites grouped by chapter. As you read the book, it's hard not to want to head for the computer and look them up immediately. If you are contemplating buying or building a garden office or studio, I strongly recommend buying this book.

Inspiring!,

This review is from: Shedworking: The Alternative Workplace Revolution (Paperback)
When I became a freelance permaculture teacher/designer a couple of years ago the need for work/life separation when based at home became apparent quite quickly - creating my own 'garden office' was the answer, and Alexes 'Shedworking' blog provided much inspiration and practical advice. The book distills the high points of this and is a pleasure to read and enjoy, with so many lavish high quality photos of outdoor structures and garden retreats it could almost be considered 'shed-porn'!!

The book is one of a handfull that enlighten us into the use of a 'shed' as an extra room, for whatever purpose; I purchased the book as a study aid rather than a guide to use but overall it was enlightening to see this modern approach to the change in funtionality.
