Review

Oliver Goldsmith's comedy was a milestone: yes, it's fast and funny, almost farcical at times, a great night out, and so on, but it's also a psychological masterpiece written at the time when English society began its stately progress towards its admirable class system. Sunday Times "A bomproof comedy...Oliver Goldsmith's play is about the clash between town and country, between varying degrees of pretension." Robert Dawson Scott, The Times, 04.06.08 'Against Sean Crowley's elegant blank canvas of a set, which allows a home to be mistaken for an inn, Goldsmith's themes of class and snobbery unfold with delicious clarity. The performances are both ticklish and sophisticated - the actors step outside the action to address the audience directly - and yet played for traditional laughs and tremendous relish.' Elisabeth Mahoney, Gaurdian, 01 May 2009 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

This classic comedy features Marlow, the shy courter of Miss Hardcastle. The young woman 'stoops' by pretending to be a barmaid - someone with whom Marlow will not feel bashful - and thus wins his hand. Foibles with the young couple's fathers complicate the plot, creating misunderstandings which only full disclosure will resolve. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I am using this text to complete my A-level english. the layout leaves room for annotation and there is just enough information to inspire thought, but not too much to swamp you with detail. The price is also just right.also the fact that it was published in 1999 ensures that it is up to date.

She Stoops to Conquor by Oliver Goldsmith is a very funny play. The characters are all splendidly individual and their interactions make for hilarious fun as the prospective husband of Kate, Marlow, mistakes her house for a pub and insults her father, her mother is carried away planning a wedding that only she is interested in, her brother play pranks, jewels change hands very quickly, and with fighting and painck attacks the dialogue is fast and witty. The Longman edition has a ten page introduction with notes on the author and an exstensive study plan at the end of the text that enables indepth study for students sitting A-levels or students working on a university degree.

I studies this play for my A level coursework. Once you begin to analyse characters, it is quite easy and interesting, however making the link to pastoral seemed straightforward at first, but then there were too few examples and indirect links. Much more interesting on screen!
