Review

I know of no comedy for many years that has so much exhilarated an audience; that has answered so much the great end of comedy - making an audience merry. --From Boswell's Life of Johnson on Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer.

Product Description

Number 44 in Nick Hern Book's Drama Classics series, providing great drama at a great price. Includes the full text, plus a short introduction that takes in the life of the playwright, explores what happens in the play, its place in English comedy and the themes of marriage, education, social standing, deception and disguise.

The best-loved English comedy of the 18th-century is a masterpiece of misunderstandings and a sharp satire on social standing. It brilliantly mocks the snobbery of London through the manipulations of the country, embodied in Goldsmith's great creation Tony Lumpkin. She Stoops to Conquer also celebrates the virtues of "laughing comedy," which Goldsmith advocated over the prevalent sentimental forms of his contemporaries.

4.0 out of 5 stars just enough information and layout for efficent study, 7 Nov 2000

This review is from: She Stoops to Conquer (Drama Classics) (Paperback)
I am using this text to complete my A-level english. the layout leaves room for annotation and there is just enough information to inspire thought, but not too much to swamp you with detail. The price is also just right.also the fact that it was published in 1999 ensures that it is up to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars witty, well written, includes good study guide, 10 Dec 2000
By A Customer
She Stoops to Conquor by Oliver Goldsmith is a very funny play. The characters are all splendidly individual and their interactions make for hilarious fun as the prospective husband of Kate, Marlow, mistakes her house for a pub and insults her father, her mother is carried away planning a wedding that only she is interested in, her brother play pranks, jewels change hands very quickly, and with fighting and painck attacks the dialogue is fast and witty. The Longman edition has a ten page introduction with notes on the author and an exstensive study plan at the end of the text that enables indepth study for students sitting A-levels or students working on a university degree.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good study read, but not a choice for leisure, 5 Sep 2010
I studies this play for my A level coursework. Once you begin to analyse characters, it is quite easy and interesting, however making the link to pastoral seemed straightforward at first, but then there were too few examples and indirect links. Much more interesting on screen!
