Emma is a girl who likes to control. When she tries out for the local voltige (horseback acrobatics) team she meets Cassandra, a strong, attractive and vivacious girl. As they get to know each other they share a sense of wicked fun and quickly become best friends.
But rapid-fire confusion sets in. Feelings of jealousy, competiveness and sexual attraction have them pushing each other to their limits. As Emma spends more and more time away from home with Cassandra, her little sister Sara begins to discover her own sexual identity, all the while pining for affection from a reluctant babysitter.
Lisa Aschan's taboo-busting She Monkeys lifts the lid on a group of girls for whom gender is both weapon and toy, pushing the boundaries of political correctness to breaking point.

When teenager Emma (Mathilda Paradeiser) joins the local voltige (equestrian acrobatics) team, she meets Cassandra (Linda Molin) and they become fast friends. As Cassandra helps Emma gain the grace and agility to be successful at the sport, their friendship grows.
As the girls start spending more time together, they begin to explore the boundaries of friendship and soon move into an intimate relationship. The voltige competition however, quickly intensifies and the girls end up pitted against each other leading to a powe struggle that intensifies into a psychological battle of wills.
Swedish Director Lisa Aschan has created a stunning debut film of intense psychological drama with ultimate control as the prize. She Monkeys is a coming of age tale like no other. What could easily be a run of the mill story of teenage angst, at the hands of Aschan, is turned into a deeply disturbing storyline.
Both Mathilda Paradeiser (Emma) and Linda Molin (Cassandra) are amazingly talented young women who portray the lead roles with sensitivity. Paradeiser is especially adept at glances that say far more than words but are incredibly chilling.
